Looks like a lot more have working CEL's than do not. I scanned the owners manual just so everyone won't think I'm crazy.

CEL info is 2/3 way down page.

EDIT... Not sure where the info went, read on...

Very interesting, Tom... I went out and looked at my owners manual to see if it said the same thing (thinking they made a running change sometime during the 88 production and reflected the change in the manual), and my owners manual says the same.

Sooooo.. what the heck is going on here? Most 88s seem to have a CEL that works, but the owners manual says they shouldnt have one. All 88 5 speeds had LA3 computers, right? As far as I know, all LA3s have the CEL function enabled. Does that mean that maybe Ford just didnt put bulbs in the CEL socket?????? Maybe 88 49 state / Canada TCs came out of the factory without bulbs, but over the years, machanics / former owners installed a bulb in the CEL socket?? This is starting to make less and less sense to me!

It sure is bizarre. Perhaps Ford changed their minds and at some point (when the EGR recall was done, perhaps?) they instructed mechanics to install a CEL when the car was in for service.

Here are some more owner's manual ponderings:

My red 93 Cougar's velvety owner's manual case is red. My black 88 TC's is black. A dark blue Mark VII I saw had a dark blue case. Coincidence, or do they match the car color? If so, it must only be on their higher end cars because my parents' 90 Sable and Ranger do not have matching cases.

My TC's manual case has a sheet stuck in it saying something to the effect of "if your car was equipped with keyless entry, the auto-lock switch on the driver's seat is disconnected. See your dealer to enable this feature." My TC doesn't have keyless entry. The Sable's auto-lock never did work despite entering the code to enable it. Same with a friend's Mark. Did they all come from Ford with this deactivated? If so, WHY?!

No, it is just coincedence. I sold many many many Fords and the owners manuals were not colored to the car.

The auto locks were deactivated because the people smart enough to turn them on would not lock themselves out all the time. The people too dumb to be able to turn the off would lock themselves out all the time.

Jeff, yep all you have to do is install the bulb in the CEL socket, presto instant working CEL. I put bulbs in most of the previous ones I sold. Seems wierd that I have had eight '88 TC'c and no CELs, wonder what the odds of that are?? Maybe I should be playing Lotto and not messing with TC's [Image: smile.gif]

segfaultxr7, the 3-4 cases I have seen for the 88 TCs have been black. Only had one black 88 TC.

For auto lock to operate there is a two wire plug under the drivers seat that must be connected. It connects to a switch in the seat. So someone must be seated or no autolock. Doesn't quite make sense, guess Ford didn't want the doors locking if a passenger pulled trans in gear(auto tranny in my example) while the driver was out taking a whiz.

The auto lock feature worked on at least one of my previous TC's but, I had to enable it. Cant remember if it worked on the one I sold a couple of months ago or not. The feature has to be re-enabled if the battery has been disconnected. I'm kind bad about battery hopping between vehicles I'm gonna sell. Dont believe the '87s even have the autolock feature.

Note.. I see GT350R has explained the reason for Ford disabling the autolock, while I was pondering my typings. [Image: smile.gif]

Both my 87 driver and my 88 parts car had working autolock. Moot point on my 87 since the alarm system locks the doors 5 seconds after the car is running if the doors are shut. The autolock only locks the doors when it senses voltage going to the backup lights. On an auto equipped car it's great because you always pass reverse going to drive. On a 5-speed car it's not as neat of an option.

I always leave the car parked in R, so my 5sp makes good use of autolock. Interesting, I've pulled the battery many times over the years and never had to re-enable the feature <shrug>.
