I am looking at a thunderbird in the junk yard taht has a moonroof. it is in good condition.

Has anyone installed a used moonroof/sunroof? what pieces would i need? is it easy? what other parts are needed? is this plausible at all?

I haven't done it, but the headliner and the sunvisors are different.

You want the headliner, or you could "modify" your current one. To take the sun roof out you have to take the head liner out, there is an interior bracket. It has about 24 phillips head screws. It was a PITA when I took mine out... tore the alumn. metal backet up. Then the sunroof has a seal around it you'll have to cut/scrape from the inside... then push out and viola! It took me a while... alot easier if you have a saws-all and you just cut the whole roof section out and take it home and work it on a bench. heheheh [Image: biggrin.gif]

Edit:
Almost forgot the rubber/plastic interior strip around the headliner needs to come and I think the dome light is relocated to the rear some. (been 4 years...)

Thanks for the replies guys!!

I am more interested in the installation half? Is it do-able? if i ruin the seal, how much does it cost to replace? Does the seal hold the entire thing up, or is there screws/brackets also?

The seal is like an RTV blue material, you'll want to get more to re seal it to the new car.

Make sure you find the center of the car. Mark it off. Then find the center of the outline you're going to cut from... [b]Always measure smaller than what you're going to cut out...[b]

The moon roof sits in the hole. Not too tight... Then the alumn. bracket that comes up from the inside and bolts through and sandwiches the roof between the bracket and window. Make sure you dry fit the window before sealing and clean both surfaces (roof and bottom of window) well.

If you go to the yard and tear one out you'll see how it's put together.

Does anyone have pics of the inside of their roof panel w/ the headliner removed and w/ a power moonroof? Does anyone have some good pics of the various moonroof pieces out of the vehicle? I am working on a similar project right now.
Also, could someone measure their factory moonroof width and depth? I am curious how much bigger the surface area is of the factory flip-up open air roof is that was used on the '83-'85 cars (supposedly some '86 cars had them also) is to the power moonroof. Thanks!

Hey,

Wouldn't it be easier to cut out a good size junk of the roof and weld it back on with the moonroof equipped one? My wrecked TC has a moonroof. I will post pics of the roof for you.

I have an 88 TC w/ sun roof and an 88 with out ........you are in for a lot more wind and road noise with the sun roof car ...personally I wouldn't get another ...I like the ride to be nice and quiet on the inside ...and need I mention the security level of a piece of glass is nill .......you can ruin a good roof real easy if you aren't careful with your measurements ....measure twice ....cut once .........Ashley
