Hi guys

I have searched the forums and have found conflicting answers to this question.

1. '84 five speed. MERCON ATF or gear lube ?
2. How do I know if I have a non-world class trans?

Does anybody have the proper answer ? Please?

Thanks,
Dave

I would suggest ATF...something Synthetic

If you have an 87-88 TC, you have a WC T-5...unless it was swapped at some point.
All hail Project "Marauder" !

So the link PeteD gave me says that '83 and '84 T-5's are non-World Class and, I quote,

"One last piece of important information. ALL World Class T-5 use ATF oil and NOT heavy gear oil or Redline MTL! All NON-World Class T-5 use 70 wt gear oil."

So I guess that does it !

But to add to the conflicting info, I called Hanlon Motorsports and they told me to drain the trans and re-fill with Mobil 1 Synthetic or Mercon/Dexron III.

They said if the trans is whining (which it is) to fill it will 80/90 gear lube and get rid of it or prepare for a rebuild.

Thanks a million fellas,

Dave

PRE-1985(non World Class) T-5s use gear lube... Check your owners manual...

Should be a model ID tag on one of the tail housing bolts...

I've seen pictures of a 1983 Ford shop manual say ATF.

my experience is you can use ATF or gear oil in early manual transmissions. the later ones have a fiber lining on the sychronizers and need the friction properties of ATF. that said, i use royal purple synchromax in all my manual transmissions...
