Does anyone remember seeing advertisments for a special paint you apply to your license plate that inhibits the ability to photograph the plates? The intersection cams are sending out tickets in the hundreds in some of the S Cal towns and according to several reports on TV, they are not fair. They are nail you when your're legal but you have to fight city hall, good luck, to clear it. If you don't pay it in Cal it's reported to the state as a dead beat and come time to renew you are stuck will all kinds of fines. Hasn't happen to me but I've talked to a couple that have and they now need blood presure meds.

No endorsement implied; five minutes searching with Google found this.
Here\'s an interesting read about it, and here\'s another interseting article.
Try doing a little "search" research, you find out all sorts of neat things.

seriously, if your running red lights often, you should be trying to fix that problem, not the ticket part... here in west LA they used to be really aggressive, but have recently either 1) been turned down, or 2) turned off their flash, as i dont see many flashes these days... this is definately getting out of hand. when i think of some company making money off MY money, that pisses me off, especially when they make more money, by directly screwing me over...
in case anyones reading this, fight your tickets!

Thanks for the replies. I havn't had a ticket in about twenty years however these cams apperar to be little more than a legal shake down. Al Copone would have loved this system.

You're absolutely correct, they're about generating revenue for the city, not about safety. IIRC some of the data shows just the opposite in fact. There's quite a bit about this subject out on the web, strangely enough I was reading about it just a couple of days ago. Do some Googling and you might be surprised.

One of the tricks they use is to shorten the time of the yellow light, there by resulting in more people running a red light, especially people use to how the lights were timed in that area. It's this same thing that also causes more rear end accidents, making it less safe.
