got a question again... got TPS set @ .95 volts.... now im back to timing... i figure a pretty much stock TC with a worn cam should idle a little higher than base... say 1k or 1100 RPM's.. I set the timing to TDC.. fired her up.. let her warm up... set base idle as best i could... then turned dizzy till 15BTDC... Connected spout... now my bird has an issue with starting... i have to crank and pump gas to get her to start.. and my alternator belt is slipping off...(im assuming thats because i dont have power steering belt on so im thinking that is engine wobble). But without accessory belts the bird fires fine.. underload she hesitates....

When I reconnect SPOUT where should timing go? mine goes to about 20BTDC. is that normal?

1.After car is warmed up, set the timing before the idle since timing can affect idle speed. 1k is the desired base idle.

Timing should increase 20* +/- 3* when the spout is reinstalled. This means if you set base timing to 10* btc then plug the spout in you should see 27 to 33*

Although you may be able to run 15*, let me suggest that you start with 10-12* until you have all the bugs worked out. Then work your way up.

Why no PS. The idle pulley could be worn and cocked, allowing the belt to walk. This can be hard to see. Are you sure the alt or the idler pulley aren't binding, putting too much load on the system?

i just hadnt hooked power steering up just set... im thinking worn motor mounts maybe causing a "wobble" throwing the belts off. Im so close to getting this wounded bird flying again. I dont think it is load...so now i gotta set base idle back to 10BTDC... fun fun fun.... Guess im gonna hook PS back up and see if that gets rid of the belt wobble

If you got wobble in the belt system - it isn't motor mounts.

Let me know how that works for ya! Big Grin

Engine mounts play no part in throwing belts. The pulleys and belts all wobble with each other as they are mounted on the engine.

As Pete mentioned, check the tensioner pulley to see if it is turning freely or not. When the tensioners get old or a bearing gets worn they will get some angle on them and cause the belt to walk. Additionally you may have a bad tensioner not keeping enough tension on the belt.

Any of the other pulleys bent or warped?

And just for information, pumping the throttle does nothing to add gas. If you hold the throttle open when cranking the computer will not open the injectors. Good way to clear a flooded engine. It should start foot off the throttle.

it doesnt start foot off the throttle... i have to pump it. i have to open the throttle a little to get it fired. tensioner turns fine.. doesnt seem warped nor are any of the pulley's.... the only difference is i used aftermarket water pump bolts... but that shouldnt make a difference.

My turbo is shot.. i can hear the turbine slamming into the housing this sucks... oh well time for a garrett from an 86 TC.. do the coolant and oil lines match up on the garrett?

If it doesn't start "foot off" the throttle, there is something else wrong besides the turbo.

i got it to start foot off the throttle.. but i can hear my turbo shaft hitting the housing... so im assuming it is toast.. I have a garrett from an 86TC to bolt onto it... just hope the oil and water lines are about the same
