I'm putting my head back on and when I took it off I left the intake manifold bolted to the head because removing the lower bolts looked like a losing proposition.
I would love to put the head on then the lower intake, but is it even possible to get to the lower bolts on the lower intake with it in position? If it is will you share the secret?

It is possible but a bit of a PITA. Use a 1/4" drive setup set up instead of 3/8". You will need at least one flex coupling and a couple extensions. It's been a long time since, but I did it once.

why? weight? i always bolt that on first. upper too, just not with the gasket (it will have to come back off to bolt the other stuff to the upper manifold, and to install the cam cover). then i use a 6 ft 2x4 and a chunk of rope and a friend, and we use the manifold to carry the head into the car, and set it down easy. saves your back, and avoids chinking the head on anything as you guide it in.

Genius Jon! I will give that a try on Wednesday when I hopefully get a few hours to work on it.
