Loss of blower fan control

So, it started out as, I would have 1-4 blower speed settings and they'd all work. The switch would be easy to move up and down. Then, the highest speed went out and wouldn't work. Now the complete opposite happened... and I would only have the highest setting and I would have difficulty moving the switch from low to high, and it would be really hard to get it to work at all, so when I got it to stay on high I would have to leave it set to high and just use the vent/floor/defrost controller as an on off. Now after a while it would randomly go on and off as I drove. And today, I lost complete fan control, and it seems to be stuck on the lowest setting, however where I distribute the air works fine. Any suggestions? It's stressful during colder mornings where there's frost on the inside of the windshield. Thanks.

I would try to spray some contact cleaner in the switch. It's either that or the blower relay is taking a dump. If you replace the blower relay and it fails a short time later, then the blower motor is usually needing replacement.

Our cars dont have a blower relay like many newer cars do. All the current for the blower motor goes thru the ignition switch, which hastens the death of the ignition switch if the blower is run on high nearly all the time.

Contact cleaner might work, but the switch contacts are possibly burnt due to the blower bearings going bad and the motor pulling extra current. If it only works on high, might check the connector to the blower resistor for damage / corrosion and pull the resistor and have a look at it.

I meant to say blower resistor, not relay. I went thru a couple of those when my blower motor was going out.

I'm going to take it out and have a look at it when I have some spare time, I don't think it would be the resistor since it would work on occasion? I found the switch very hard to change speeds, so I might have a bad/broken or stuck switch. If that's the case could I just wire up any 4 way switch or does ford have a specific replacement?

Grab a "new" fan switch / rear defrost switch, mode and temp lever assembly from the JY from any 86 (maybe 85) thru 88 Tbird.
