loosing power

my 88 TC runs really good but I have a problem climbing up our local mountain which is not very steep but yet I need to go over this mountain on my daily communte. Problem is that as I'm going up I loose power as the turbo kicks in and reaches 10psi it stops. So basically if i'm travelling up hill at 55 and start to loose power and even if I down shift the turbo just doesn't have a long enough response time. Also, I can hear some rattling from my engine and this has been happing when I reach max boost. I did have to change the tension belt spring because mine started to pull outward or away from the engine (if that makes sense). can anyone suggest what may be happening?

Which tensioner belt spring you talking about? The cam belt?

If as above, have you checked the cam timing for starters and then the ignition timing?

Did the lower power problem start all at once or has it gradually gotten worse?.

Have you noticed the turbo and manifold glowing a brighter red, even after normal driving?

sorry but I don't know of the spring but if you were to change the belts on your TC it would be the spring loaded part that you release the tension in order to pull off the belts. I noticed that it has been loosing power gradually but I just had the pickup coil replaced but it ran the same before I had problems with that. I didn't notice a glowing from the turbo or manifold.

sorry forgot to mention I also relocated the TFI module with a new one and a 94 astro van heat sink. but either way it has been loosing power going up hill and it almost seems like there is no boost to get my car up without having to down shift a couple of times.

Mike, I was trying to determine if you had changed the tensioner for the cam belt or for one of the two accessory drive belts (PS, Alt) or the (AC)
That would give me some clue on timing.

One possible cause of the power loss is a blockage in the exhaust system, such as the converter getting blocked. It will cause a power loss, reduced MPGs. It will also cause the turbo/manifold to glow brighter than normal (best seen in dark conditions)

Assuming there is no restrictions in the intake system (really dirty air filter, for example, I would suspect an exhaust restriction.

Make sure the am and ignition timing are correct.
Doing a compression test would be good, but if all that is OK, look at the exhaust system

Better watch that rattling. Probably detonation.

Check fuel pressure under load to be sure base is correct and FP increases 1:1 with boost.

Thanks a lot Pete and Jeff! comments well appreciated.

although I do have a question from firstsvo because I usually here rattling when I want to go fast and it mainly happens above 5000rpms what is the cause and what do I need to do?

Thanks, Mike

If it sounds like marbles in a can, probably detonation. Do a search on it. I have a minor issue with detonation myself.

Do what Jeff suggested by running the fuel system diagnostics:
