looking for a short

My car is still playing a game of going black (no electrics at all) when I turn the ignition switch. Making it run is usually a matter of removing the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds and trying it again.

I removed the battery from the car and checked resistance from one side of the starter solenoid to ground and have continuity, then I checked from the other side to ground and also have continuity.

I think that is abnormal.

Is it?

You do not have a short. If you had a short in a high current circuit, either you would have popped a fuse or fuse link or the car would have burned to the ground.

Are you talking about the small terminal on the starter solenoid? With that disconnected from the push on connector, it will show a very low resistance to ground due to the solenoid coil.

Has the ignition switch ever been replaced? Ford had issues with their ignition switches on virtually all its crs from the mid 80s thru the mid 90s.

I'm measuring from the main terminals. If I take the wires off the terminals and check continuity from the fused links to ground I have continuity.

The ignition switch is the one it came with and if I get home in time this afternoon it has top billing on my to do list.

Fuse links will read continuity to ground if they supply a load that is hot at all times.
