Ok, I have alot of drive-terrain rattle at about 55MPH, not sure of the problem but just as well replace the driveshaft. I have a manual of course.

I have heard that the aluminum driveshaft from an Aerostar would fit, but question is would it hold up???

I have one on my 88 TC from a ford Aerostar. The shop used F-150 universals. It's completely balanced, meaning you can do a 180 and still no shakes. As far as drag racing, leaving the line at high rpms I don't know. The ford ranger with reg. cab and with the long bed has a alum. driveshaft (89-94?) It's the same dia. as our TC'S, and they use the same universals. The Aero's are smaller in dia.

I took the alum. driveshaft & the driveshaft from my 88 TC to the shop. They cut the alum. the same length as the other one. Then cut the ends off both shafts, welded the TC's ends to the alum. and they did a high speed balance. Welding weights on where needed. Then they put in F-150's universals, because the Aero's shaft dia. is smaller then our TC's. My alum. shaft was balanced without the counter balance, but my son's 86TC was balanced with the counter balance. But he has the Ranger alum. shaft. Why the difference, I don't know.

I have been considering an aluminum shaft too and seeing this post got me motivated to do some research. Received some really great news from Eric at Banford/Six States Dist/SLC http://www.sixstates.com/service/drivelines/ 1-800-960-4677/801-488-4677 or [email protected]

I emailed him to find out if they could rebalance my existing shaft, as well as build me a new all aluminum shaft for my 88 TC and how much it would run. Here's his reply:

"All our work is done in house in this shop. I can balance your your shaft only or I can i can build a new aluminum shaft. To balance your shaft is $35.00 to build a new aluminum shaft would br $250.00. If you wanted to send your driveline in I could save you about $75.00 by useing your slip yoke and flange. Freight is around $17.00 to $20.00 to get it to you. If I can help let me know. Eric Banford/Six States Dist/SLC 1-800-960-4677/801-488-4677 or [email protected]

"NOBODY BEATS OUR QUALITY, AND GUARANTEE!"

At Six States, our goal is to provide the finest quality drive line products by working directly with each customer on an individual basis. Complete drive line service for all cars, trucks, recreational, foreign, domestic vehicles and 4 x 4 trucks and custom Jeep applications. If all goes well, my I'm sending them my shaft in a few weeks to have my existing shaft redone (as a spare) and I will have him build a new alum shaft based on the OE shaft.

Hey I have an 84 tc with a v8, I'm going with a Mark Williams alum. driveshaft. Their custom shafts are about 350-380 I think, I have read A LOT of good stuff about these people as well.

'84 turbo, electronics died and I had this 302 short block in the basement........ this summer I should have about 350/350 hp/lbft and I can tune it with a screw driver. try that with a honda!

The 93-94 Ranger with the reg. cab, long bed for sure. With the 4 cyl., 5-spd. I see the new Rangers have the alum. shaft, but I'm not sure if they have the cv joint in it or not.

Whatz the weight difference between the stock TC shaft, and the aerostar shaft? And can areostar shafts handle alot of torque?

I can't tell you the weight difference for sure (I can check tomorrow) but, I think someone on this board previously twisted one. Do a search you should be able to find it. The Ranger shaft is a heavier shaft than the Aerostar shaft. My son bought a Ford Motorsport shaft for his SVO, it is heavier than the cut Ranger shaft for his TC.
