This has been the longest day. Went to the local junkyard about 9:30 this morning. Things started off quick on pulling the head off of an 86 tc. Someone has already helped themself to the turbo, manifold, down pipe and transmission. So I figure, all I have to do is take off the intakes valve cover and then head bolts and finally pull it off. Luck would have it, at that. I get the valve cover off and I didnt have a 12pt socket. So I go to Sears, and get one. 15 minutes back to the yard, and its the wrong size. (I didnt mention the 3 or 4 other places I had to walk in before someone told me Sears) So I go back exchange it and back I went. I start breaking the head bolts loose on it and the last one I tried on the passenger side the brand new craftsman socket broke. THAT SUCKED! So I drive another 15 minutes back to sears again, and exchange it for a 1/2 inch drive piece. Well I go back to the yard to find Ill need an extension. The ratchet wouldnt fit on the socket due to the cam towers. So I load my stuff back up for like the 5th time and go to Advance Auto Parts to get the Extension. FInally after about 6 hours I get all the bolts broke loose. I Break the gasket seal, remove the lower intake and Home Im ready to go! IM going to have my Uncle who did heads for 20 years look at it and tell me what it needs before I try to put it on. Hope fully I can get out soemwhat cheap. The head was $46 with a 30 day warranty, I also Got another BP sensor for $3 and a Head light switch that the dash dimmer doesnt work I paid $2 for. All In all I guess it was a good Day. I guess I got a good deal.

The oil that was in the motor looked good. The plugs looked like it was ran a little lean. The coolant that was in the head looked new. The cam and Followers looked good as far as I can Tell. They look better than the ones in my car now. Is there anything different about an 86 head thats different in the 88?

I believe the heads are the same. Its the intakes that are different. 46 bucks for a head is very cheap. I would go take it to a machine shop to verify that it does not have a hair-line crack. Sounds like my adventures when I go to the junkyard (Missing Tools), except I never find a deal like that.

So it was a deal? I think I could have gotten it for 39 and change w/o warranty. I m going to have it dis assembled today, so it can go to the machine shop tomorrow.

$6 buck is a cheap. If it's cracked it probably useless and you can take it back.

Well, my dad disassembled the head this morning. He is actually taking it to the machine shop tomorrow. He siad is was most likely a good head. Their going to clean it, do a valve job, and put in seals. He showed me how to check the guides in it and said that they looked good also. He also said the head has been rebuilt too, there was an inspection number on it and had a fel pro gasket too. IM not sure if I am going to get a cam, the one it it looked okay, but my dad said to pick one out and he'd take care of it. IM not used to this I wonder if he's die-ing.

lol, sounds like you had a fun day. I hope the head turns out good for ya. I think the rings are going bad on my TC.. Not sure yet but I'm getting a lot of oil out the dipstick and some out of the oil cap and lots in the turbo/VAM. I'm gonna compression test it today. Its probably time to buy that 351 short block eh?

Just make sure to mag it for cracks. A visual inspection won't cut it. These heads are notorious for cracks in the exhaust valve seats that run all the way into the water jacket.

There going to check the whole thing. Mag, pressure test surface, and valve job with seals.
