What makes you think it is bad? They seldom fail. Is it pulling timing when you don't hear detonation? They can react to things like valve train noise, for example

My mechanic says it is. Not sure exactly what is making it bad, he just got done rebuilding my motor and is trouble shooting little issues that are keeping it from running its best. He fixed a vacuum leak that was kepping it from building boost and now says it is clattering under boost. Any help would be awesome.

The knock sensor only causes the EEC to pull out timing to stop it from cackling, but there are limits. Some of us disconnect the KS to avoid it pulling timing when there is no detonation. We don't recommend anybody do this and certainly until they know what actual knock sounds like and don't boost it with the radio up. It can lead to blown head gaskets and worse (much worse)

Whatis needed is to find the root cause of the problem, why it's clattering (cam timing, ignition timing, air leak or fuel delivery problem like a bad pump or regulator or clogged fuel filter among others.

Knock sensors are engine specific. They are tuned to detect a specific, narrow range of frequencies characteristic of a specific engines detonation. In other words, a random KS from another engine wont work right even if physically fits. Dont quite me on this, but I seem to remember the 2.3T KS is tuned to detect 2800 Hz.

If your mechanic ran the KOER self test and didnt bang on the intake with a wrench, etc at the dynamic response code, the EEC will throw a code 25 for the KS. As Pete said, they VERY rarely fail.
