Just won't add up

After pulling the motor from the car and checking with local machine shops I just don't think it is worth fixing. Turns out the motor is cooked! Bearings are spun, piston are scorded like crazy. Block is ok, head is ok but I've got quote from a low(?) of 1800 to a high of 2700 bucks for a complete rebuild. Through in a body job and I really think I should find another tc to be my builder.Am not 100% sure if I am going to scrap projet yet but I have to weigh the cost vs different car option. Or just build it as I go over time. I was hoping to complete this car for about 5,000 gran but I don't think i can get it ALL in for thaat price. Sorry to babble.. Just needed to think. Na car will be sold for parts.

Any chance of finding a decent short or long block in the JY?

All I could find is an 87 Merker motor minus the turbo,intake and acc for 600 bucks. Has (?) 122,000 km on it. It would get me running but ..... who knows with a jy motor.

You know what sucks? Two years ago I needed to borrow a car. A wholesale buddy of mine loans me a car for week. Guess what it was? A 1987 TC with 47,000 original kms! This car was mint. Blue , looked like new. I coild of bought it for 3000 bucks. Hey I had no idea what these cars were, just thought it was a four banger Ford. He sold it for 5 grand! Hind sight really is 20/20.

122km isn't that bad Tank, unless they ran it out of oil sounds like a good deal.

I would but engine is out of car. Been out for a while. Car is no longer at JY. Would I need that cars computer to run that engine?

I don't think so, and you already have anything you may need to swap (fuel injectors) on the existing engine. What year is your TC again?

To bad you weren't closer. I have an engine that was running when pulled from car. It was pulled to put into another car, but decided not to. It has no turbo or exhaust, but it ran fine.

My car is an 87. I'd just hate to buy this motor and find out it is useless to me.

Lets see, $600 CDN is like what, $6 american $$? If you get the motor, just transfer your injectors, etc over to the new motor. Internally, these motors are all the same, just minor cam differences.

you do know that you could buy a dfc4 or dfc8 from ATK, get a 3 year warranty and all for 1k(US)? I work there and I'll get you a number.. shipping is like $150 and the import tax(US) or so and they pick up the core
