Ever since I was able to drive I liked improving the performance on cars...so I always took my time with gathering info on ALL aspects of the build-up of the engine about to be rebuilt...thus I have been gathering info on the 2.3 from anywhere and everywhere...being a CHEAP STREET kind a guy...I am now down to the final item(s) of my build... THE CAM...with my own knowledge and that of countless others the dilema[sp] is...do I build it like a regular engine or take into account that with the turbo the cylinder pressures increase, temp increases,(DOES COMPRESSION RATIO CHANGE?)...without the mods of larger exhaust, gases have a hard time exiting the head so this does influence the cam and ALL the timing events of it...my thought is keeping the stock intake or going just a little larger, increasing exhaust valve size to just under the intake, slight porting on the intake side [65-70mm TB],porting but not gutting the upper and lower intake, slightly porting the head...more on the exhaust side, stock IHI at 20psi[have been running 18-22 for 3 months with nothing bad happening and I love it!]3" elbow off the turbo with 3"from the turbo back...high flow cat...Dyno bullet mufflers.Fuel: taking the twin tank switching valve from a ford truck and setting it up so I can "DEADHEAD" the pump when WOT...or...255 Walbro and AFPR...JUST REMEBER..."I AM CHEAP STREET"...I like to have FUN with my cars and not spend a TON of money[Secretly I would like to own the FASTEST Turbo Coupe on the planet at any cost LOL!!!] anyway the choice of cam is my biggest concern...getting the biggest GAIN for the $$$ I'm more interested with torgue #'s than with HP #'s...soooo....lets try and narrow the choices down to say maybe 5 of the most favorite or most selected cams any and all know about...the bottom end should be built by January 2004 with the remainder of the engine done by March of 2004 and in either 83,86 87 TC...by May 2004...This will be a STREET CAR...If the Lord's willing and the creak don't rise!!!Let me know what ya'll think

Here is a very good list of cams.

I like the Engle 111. I don't know how it will do with the torque, I alwasy looked at max power potential. The Engle 55 was the hot ticket till the ranger roller cam around. I mean till Joe Morgan ran it and said he liked it so it was now the best.

Contact turboalpine of turboford.org. Give him your list of mods and he will make a very good recommendation. Maybe a ranger roller regrind? Here are some specs for the regrinds.

The cam isn't going to change static compression.

If you are keeping the IHI then your wise to keep the intake side relatively stock. You don't need a bigger TB until your making really big HP, it's not the bottleneck. And you not going to make anywhere near that HP with IHI, no matter what else you do.

You can go OS on th exhaust valve. Some go 1.55, most go 1.59" To get anything out of it you will have to have some blending in the pockets and open up the runners a little.
Clenaing up the intake pockets and just smoothing the skin on the intake runners won't hurt anything

I'm not going to get into the great cam debate but I will offer this. The IHI doesn't blow enough air to support high rpm performance, period! It's already running out of air past 5K on a bone stock engine. Anything you do is just going to make it run out of air sooner. Consider a cam that maximizes the low and mid range.

You can run an IHI higher than 18 but it's debatable if you getting much more out of it.
It suppose to be harder on the turbo also (overspeed)
