Jeff (or anybody else that's interested...):

Having laid flat on my back for 1 1/2 days because of back pain !!! I've had nothing else to do but think of stupid stuff...

Does anybody have the pin-out of the EEC-IV LA3 ? If so, wouldn't it be possible to build a real-time monitor of all sensors from the EEC ? I mean, if you knew what all of the pin-outs were, couldn't you just tap into those and monitor TPS voltage, Injector voltage, MAF, VAM, ECT...etc...with either analog or digital guages real-time ???

You could start out with a simple bread-board and see if that worked...?

Is this a dumb question or not ?

Dan... Ford thought that this kind of info would be useful also, and designed their breakout box to do just that. Every dealer has s faw around. It is basically a box with contact pins numbered 1 to 60, and a male and a female 60 pin EEC connector coming out of it. You plug the BOB into the EEC and the harness, and you can monitor every single input or output of the EEC. They cost BIG bucks to buy one, but you could build one by getting a male 60 pin off a junk EEC and a female 60 pin off a junk harness, and wiring them together pin for pin with a tap coming out for each of the 60 pins. I have toyed around with doing this from time to time, but never had the ambition to do so. Someone over at TF has one (Dave R, I think it is), but I dont know if he made it or if it is the Ford one, nor do I know where he got it for what it cost him.

Another approach is the Auto X-ray or AutoTap scanners ($200+) that let you monitor sensor inputs and activator outputs directly. For example, they will read stuff like ECT output in deg. F, throttle position in % WOT, spark advance in deg, etc.

As for the pinouts of the LA3, and other Ford computers, all that info is well known. The EVTM shows the EEC pinouts, as well as diagrams in the Engine / Emission Diagnosis Manual. I think GT350R has some of these diagrams posted on his site.

Sorry to hear about your back. I too am plagued with occasional bad back pain that really slows me down, but mine sure doesnt sound nearly as bad as yours. Getting old is a bitch!

i don't think that's possible Jeff. The older EEC-IVs didn't have the capability to provide that info.

If you check the AutoTap site, you'll see that's for OBD-II vehicles. OBD-II was required in 1996. But a few Fords got OBD-II before then (like the 4.6L in the '94 T-Bird).

One of OBD-IIs many features is the ability to provide live-data, and continue to monitor itself and sensors as well as the condition of the cats.

EEC-Vs with OBD-II is different from our EEC-IVs. i have various "scan tools" and none of them can read live-data from the EEC-IVs in our Turbo Coupes due to the EEC itself.

You can build a box like what was mentioned above, but you'll need to have a good idea of what voltage = what reading.

i know a lot of 1989 Ford vehicles with the EEC-IV had the ability to provide "live-data" through scan tools. First generation of OBD.

Our Turbo Coupe EECs don't really have that ability.

OK, JT, I stand corrected!. I thought that all OBDI cars (cars that had a CEL) had the ability to read live data from the computer, not just a few of them.

EDIT:
i need to correct myself too. Some of our TCs do have OBD-I. But no, they do not support live date mode. i'm told that was around 1991.
