Anyone try this unit? Will it fix the notorious stock gauge flux, and inaccurate stock gauge readings? I know there is a how to here and Joe made me one years ago, but it is it a good alternative to making your own?

Chip, according to the comparability checker on that ebay page, it is not compatible with 1986 or 1988 TCs. I did the 1986 check twice, the second time after a hard page refesh. See what you get??

I sent the guy a message and he said it would definitely work. Can you please ask him the necessary questions to confirm if the unit is compatible with our cars? Also maybe we can give him the necessary information so he can start making them for our cars if he doesnt at this time.

His response:
Good day,
Yes it will work for your car.

You need to get one of the electrical gurus like Jeff or JT or Paulie to look at this.
The seller says it will work on all Mustangs from '64 to '93. http://contact.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...jpinkypink

If that is true it ought to work on our TCs. I believe the stock IVRs were used on several models of Fords, not just TCs

If you red the first paragraph of Jeff's article on building his solid state IVR, he says ".....stock mechanical / thermal instrument voltage regulator (IVR) used on virtually all Ford products from the 1960s to the early 1990s is problematic. " Jeff K. http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/ivr/i...te_IVR.htm

I don't have any special knowledge that would let me ask the seller any better questions. Maybe the other guys do have the knowledge. I'd like to know more myself.

Sir all those CVR (constant voltage regulators) are basically the same. They keep the voltage at exactly 5 Volts. But the ones that our cars come stock with PULSE. If you use a test light in series with lets say the oil preasure sender you can see it pulse the lamp. Their are many guys that build kits for this application. All it does is keep a steady 5 Volts feeding the gauges. I saw one somewhere that a guy made from parts from Radio Shack. The one you found should probably work FINE. Ask the guy what the regulated voltage is. It should be 5 Volts. Thanks

I would ask that you or someone else with the necessary knowledge go to the ebay link and ask all the necessary questions to verify that this unit will work, or give him the necessary information so that he can make a TC specific IVR for our cars.

Me being the third party in the conversation, will possibly leave out a question that should be answered. Thanks

Sir try this! It has a blinking led that lets you know it is working properly. Of course, you will not see it, when the gauges are back in place. But if it is not working properly, that light will not blink and you know to look for wiring or voltage problems going to the unit.

http://www.autoinstruments.com/about.htm

It is manufactured by an Arkansas company called RT Engineering. Here is their website.

http://rt-eng.com/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page

Here is the page you are looking for. It has a description of how this unit works. Much better than ours does, apparently!

Sir at first i did not understand your post. The actual part is referred to a CVR (Constant Voltage Regulator) Basically they are all the same. GM FORD CHRYSLER ETC. The only difference is the way it hooks up. Call them and tell them the year of the car. The unit can be installed remotely by extending wires and using the old unit as a plug for the dash. Its easy to do and takes just some wiring and soldering techniques. But i am 100% sure they make a direct fit unit for your car. I will pull a TC dash and a mustang dash today and check the mounting procedure. If memory serves me they are IDENTICAL. They all pulse out 5 Volts for the gauges only difference is how they mount. Thank You

It doesnt matter if the regulated voltage to the gauges is pulsed to give an average voltage of 5 V, or if it is a constant 5 V. The thermal/mechanical gauges in our cars have such a long response time constant, that the 1 Hz or so pulse is "averaged out" by the gauges.

The stock mechanical regulator is a primitive mechanical PWM (pulse width modulation) system that is VERY common in all of electronics today, but these days, the PWM signal is electronically produced. I have designed / built a number of PWM controllers for various applications over the years, and PWM is the best way to implement DC motor speed control, control illumination, and many other things.

I built solid state constant voltage IVRs for both my Tbirds a number of years ago, and they work fine. I think the info is in the tech articles here, but I am too lazy to look and verify that. I made mine adjustabe so I can "put the gauges where I want them". I fould that, for me, 5.2 V worked the best.

The only reason I can think of for those IVRs being incompatable with TCs is the number of gauges we have that operate off the IVR. At max reading our gauges draw about 250 mA each, for 750 mA max if all 3 gauges are pinned at max. Normally, current draw is well under this 750 mA max draw. Maybe the Ebay IVR cant suppy enough current for all 3 gauges? The IVRs I built can supply 1.5 Amps (double the max requirement of the gauges) and only get slightly warm to the touch.

If you read the ebay page it gives the basic specs. He states that the regulator supplies up to .99A(990mA) continuous and 3A instantaneous. The output voltage is adjustable from 1.25V to 11V, 5.10V is the default voltage. It looks like you can order it with many different connectors, one of them shown is the 9V battery type that the TC uses.

Ok, I'm going to get one and test it out. It looks like a good alternative to making one myself. I will post pics of install and performance.
