The POS OEM thermal / mechanical IVR is a throwback to the 1960s. Check Ebay, Amazon, etc for a solid state replacement version. I built my own solid state adjustable IVRs for both my Tbirds for $5 each worth of parts.

Usually failing IVR causes the oil, temp and fuel gauges to go to max for a while and then return to normal, but I have seen them drop out too. If all 3 gauges do the same thing at the same time, by far the most likely cause is the IVR.

Yup the thing with the 9 V battery connector is the IVR.

I remember seeing some solid state IVRs a year or 2 ago, but dont remember what I searched for, as I wasnt going to buy any anyway since I built my own.

Jeff:

Can you share with us the schematic and parts you used to build your own?

I replaced mine years ago with a new OEM one, but the gauges are starting to act finicky again—all three read higher with the head/fog lights and a/c on.

1987 Turbo Coupe w/T5OD, 8.8 axle, grey smoke; most options. Got it in 1991 with 41K miles: 3 turbos, 2 heater cores, 3 T5OD full rebuilds, 6 clutches, 1 head gasket, 2 Teves II ABS units, etc. later....
