Is .040 shaved too much for a high boost motor???

I'm considering a D-port head that is fully ported and shaved 40 thousandths---will that raise compression too much?

no, it should be fine. i was running my 86 tc with the head shaved down .010 with 18-20 psi on the street for years.

...so you have a V8...isn't that cute...

I believe Cometic makes head gaskets in different thickneses if you want to retain the original compression ratio.

------------------
87 T/C, 5sp., Hardened Crank, Crower Sportsman Rods, J.E. full floating pistons, .030 over, Total Seal rings, Head and Main studs, Ported/Polished head, 1.89, 1.59 S.S Valves. Motorsport Lifters, A-234 cam, Fidanza Adj. cam sprocket, ported polished lower, gutted upper intake, Rod's S/S headers, 3" DP, T3/T04E 46, Gillis BCV, Forge Bypass, K&N Air Filter, Kirban Adj. FPR, Walbro 255 FP., 42# inj., EEC-Tuner. Still have to mount the GN I/C.

Let me put it this way. The factory manual say not to shave a head over 0.010". I'm sure there are lots of heads that have been shaved more than that and they work fine, but remember that's taking 0.040" off a deck that isn't overly thick to begin with. Makes me ask why it was shaved that much in the first place??? IMHO if it had to be shaved that much to make it flat, they should have administered last rites and buried it.

As to hope much that would change compression, I don't know. The CC would have to be cc'd and the numbers run.

It was run on a dirt track car, and it's heavily ported...

Keep it clamped tight and don't over heat it [Image: biggrin.gif]

Here is an old post from TF that shows the Cometic head gaskets available. Maybe a thicker than stock gasket will keep your copression down to give you a little safety margin.

On second thought, are you sure it an actual "turbo" head with "D" shaped combustion chambers and not the higher compression "heart" shaped chambers. Seems to me that the roundy round guys running N/As would want more comprssion which is why it got milled 0.040 in the first place. If this is the case it's going to yield a lot more compression than a stock non-turbo 9:1

See the picture. This is a NON-turbo D port head with heart shaped combustion chamber

Looks like a non-turbo head with some CC reshaping.
