I have a front end "clunk". It happens when I turn, go over bumps, and brake hard. It isn't just one clunk also, it is several all at once like maybe something is rubbing another part. Occasionally it happens on acceleration but not always.
I searched but I have some questions. I put my car on a lift at work and the following check out okay:
- tie rods / ends
- ball joints
- swaybar bushings and end links
- power steering rack bushings
- control arm bushings
- the u-joints seem tight.. I don't really know what to check but I'm not getting any vibration at any speeds 85 mph and below.
I read some stuff about the coil spring isolators and shock mounts.. Is there anything special I have to do to replace these pieces? Do I need any kind of strut compressor or special tool? What else should I check or take note of?

Also the hubs have a little bit of play in them but not too much (shaking from the 12 and 6 oclock position). I'm gonna do wheel bearings/seals tomorrow and see what happens.

Recheck your control arms, ball joints, swaybar links and bushings, and motor mounts.

I would say also check your caliper pins and bushings. Those can make an absolutely horrible sound if they get worn.

Also check the upper strut mounts.

Control arms, ball joints, and motor mounts have been checked over and over again. Swaybar bushings and end links are new, and I even took the whole damn swaybar out of the car to see if the noise went away, no go. I will check the caliper pins and bushings tomorrow as well as the upper strut mounts. Thanks guys!

Caliper pins, bushings, wheel bearings and hubs are all good. The upper strut mounts are next, as soon as I figure out how to check them.

The one we couldn't find on our 86 was the connection to the subframe. We went through everything three times. Being Old school we had no idea what those bolts on the bulkhead were, but sure enough we tightened them and the noise that was driving my wife nuts was gone. Subframe to body connections maybe someone else can describe them better, we got at them from the bottom while it was on the lift.

Mike, thank you, it sounds like you may have hit the nail on the head actually... My buddies and I spent about an hour trying to figure out where the noise was coming from today and it really sounds like its coming from BEHIND the fender more near the subframes... so this very well may be the case! Gracias amigo, I will get back with results.
