Inspection Test

My wife takes the T-bird for inspection. I ask her to take a good ride on the Parkway before taking it in. She does this, but after they get it they leave it sit for over 1/2 hour. I fail, he says it seems like the cat is bad. I call him and say it needs the cat to be warm to pass he said It had time I ran the test twice!
This is on the dyno type test:
test Mine/limits
hc2 .83/.80
co 27.17/15.00
NOx 0.72/2.00
I didn't get any other readouts from them. This is a new 3" cat at original location after a full 3" stinger exhaust.
I backed the timing down to 9* after I got home last night. in prep of new test.
Any suggestions??
Was I right about getting it hot and staying hot. Let alone the 1 wire O-2 needing to heat up.

Thanks,
Mike C

Yes, the cat needs to be at operating temp to work. If the car sat for 1/2 hour, a couple minutes of idling will not be enough to heat up the cat. Just a few minutes of idling wont heat up a one wire O2 enough either.

I always make sure that the car idles at least 20 - 30 minutes before I get a test done. If the guy shuts it off, just crawl in and start it up again. If they did ask why, just tell them because you want to pass first time.

Thanks for the reply guys! Do these numbers seem like they would pass with a HOT cat? I read 34 different posts from search, found some interesting "Stuff". I JUST changed to large vam and PE. I left the premium fuel grounded so the computer is set on premium. there is an 1/8 tank of 93 with 10% alcohol left in the car.
Any other suggestions before round 2
Thanks again,
Mike C

Be sure the EGR system is working properly.

The biggest problem is that I thought it was running good. I will pull the codes and check the EGR system tonight.
I remember a while back that there was a post about running the test in second gear instead of 1st any thoughts on that?
Thanks,

Is it a "rolling" test? If so you want to make sure that the engine is running closed-loop to insure lowest emissions. Keep it below 3000 RPM. I think most tests use something around 2500RPM or so for the rolling test.

If you search on emissions posts, there are a few mentions of pouring alcohol in the tank, along with turning the timing down like you have done.

You definately need the car up to operating temperature when it comes time for the test. Tell your lady to make sure the car stays running before the test no matter how long the wait is. Or just take it yourself.
