Id dire need of an input shaft for 88 5 speed. Please help! Are they still available new? I called a tranny shop today and they told me I need the number off the shaft. Problem is, its my daily driver and I can't take it apart until I have the parts. Thanks in advance for any sugestions.

They may be hard to get. Try calling Bob Hanlon,
http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/ about availability.

Your other choice would just get an understressed T5 from a 4cyl NA Mustang from that era. Same tranny, lower price, world class, yada yada
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/...dex2.shtml Might get the whole trans cheaper than a used shaft.

Thanks Pete. I called Hanlon, they don't have the input shaft. Ive been searching here and at turboford.org for a used tranny with no luck.
Is it possible that maybe there isn't ant damage to the shaft itself after blowing up the pilot bearing? Or should I just assume I'm going to need one? I'm trying to gather parts before tearing the car apart since it's the only vehicle I have...

Your best bet is a used tranny out of a 4 cyl. Mustang as Pete said. I've never seen the gears for the 3.97 trans listed anywhere and I've looked while trying to find out if the gears for the 4.03 in the 85 and 86 are available, to no avail. At least the 87-88 gear sets were used in later 4 cyl Mustangs. The ones in the 85-86 WC don't show up in any other vehicle.

I'm not a tranny expert, but I think you are going to have to get the trans out to determine if there is damage to the input shaft or not.

this is just a guess, but i had my throwout bearing "grenade" and the only thing that it damaged was the bearing retainer. got one from ford. i would imagine your input shaft is fine.

Sir this is the part you need for the 3.97 19 Tooth small diameter pilot main drive gear. They were on E bay a while ago and available from tranny shops. You can use a 5.0 tranny if you install a different pilot bearing. The 5.0 has a larger nose. The 5.0 tranny is a bit stronger TC is rated at 240 FT LBS 5.0 at 300 FT LBS but first gear is taller 2.95-3.35 and the SVO is 3.50. But the tranny is better for shifting the gears are spaced a little closer. What is wrong with your Tranny??? How do you know the main drive is BAD??? Just curious. Hope this helps and have a good afternoon sir

Not for the 85 and 86, different input shaft bearing retainer.
