Hey Fearless, good to see another fellow Virginian on the board. I checked out the URL Pete put up for you and there's a lot of good info there. But it seems to focus on a V8 / V6 swap. Keep in mind that there is a difference in the pilot bearing / tranny input shaft between a V8 and our 2.3 Turbos, so without some serious adaptation (like dismantling the tranny and having the input shaft modified by a machine shop) better stay away from a T-5 from a V8 car. I'm not sure whether the bolt pattern at the bell housing is the same either.

Here's the URL for a T-5 swap into a Mustang (Fox body like ours) with a 2.3L Turbo conversion, complete with pictures.
http://24.91.96.177/stinger/howto.html

This was the site I referred to when I did mine. There are some differences, but they are minor (e.g. our speedometers are electronic versus the cable set up in a 'Stang). I had to "make" a driveshaft for my conversion because I couldn't find the right one in the junk yards around here. If you run into trouble with the driveshaft, PM me and I'll give you some info on what I did.

It will be a bit of drive for you, but there are two good u-pull-it junk yards in the Tri-Cities area: Circle Automotive Recycling (C.A.R.)in Petersburg, VA and Chesterfield Auto Parts near Richmond. Chesterfield was where I picked up my tranny out of an '87 2.3L NA Stang for $35.00 (before I moved out here to the Ozarks). You can probably find everything you need there for a decent price. Just be prepared to work on gravel and tote it out in a wheelbarrow (they rent you one for a buck). They're pretty organized and the cars are up on stands so you can get to everything pretty easy. But make sure you have all the tools you'll need and preferably take a buddy along to help you. Have coffee can with you and pull the drain plug on the tranny for a sample and look for metal in the fluid BEFORE you pull it out of the car. I found two that looked like they were full of metal flake paint before I pulled the one I'm running now.

Be sure to search "T-5 swap" in the archives, read the FAQ and Tech Articles on this board. One thing no one told me is the difference in catalytic converter mounting between the auto and the T-5 (on an 87 TC anyway). If you keep the stock cat, you'll either have to cut the down pipe a little shorter or extend the mounting rods (which is what I did). You'll also need to use the original A4LD cat mount or you'll have to offset one of the rods a tube width higher (found out the hard way). Do yourself a favor and completely remove the steering column, it will make the clutch pedal installation a lot easier. Best wishes for your swap.

Does one have to pull the steering colum to install the clutch pedals? I had my steering colum dropped on my drivers seat once to get the dash out for the heater core but I never pulled it completly out. Is this a hard task?

Pulling the steering column isn't bad. You will already have the driver's seat out (unless you are a contortionist) and you must have it down to get the pedal frame loose. There's one bolt (with a nut) through the shaft in the engine compartment and it's fairly easy to get to. Then the column just pulls straight out (provided you've disconnected all the wiring). It will help to have someone hold the stub shaft when you pull the column and more important to have that someone help you get it back together when you're done.

Fearless, if you have all the tools and parts together and a transmission jack (or a buddy) you should be able to do it in a weekend. Soak the mounting nuts with penetrant on the A4LD crossmember brackets (where they go through the frame channel) ahead of time, but you may have to cut the nuts off anyway (I did, Illinois car, road salt). You'll mount the T-5 crossmember to the brackets welded to the frame just in front of the ones you've removed. You'll probably want to take the opportunity to change your rear main seal while you have the transmission out too, so add that to your parts list.

does the XR4TI have the same T5 as our Bird's? I found a fairly unmolested one in the salvage yard and looks like noone knows what is under the hood, so I keep it sitting w/ the hood down
Currently birdless, but will get another someday!

Resurected, The XR4Ti doesn't share either the T5 or the AL4D. It uses a T9 manual which from what little I have heard is not as strong as a T5. Not sure what auto it uses.
