well, weight reduction is your friend here, as the A4LD has a low power tolerance in stock form. reducing the weight as little as 200 pounds can make it an entirely different car. also, upgrading the transmission cooler to a large dedicated unit with a fan can help with longevity and wear.

you said you tied, but either way, he drives a crappy plastic s#!tbox, with about enough torque to tighten the lugnuts on my slicks, and you drive a steel luxery barge with a turbo. his car still sucks, your car has potential.

see my sig for more info on mustang swaps :p

Hey Cerebral dont get discouraged! My A4ld was hella fast with not too much done. went high 13s with no spray and 13.0 on a pig rich 75 shot. Put a big trans cooler on the front and you will love the launches when you brake stand the car on the line. Read the mods in my signature and duplicate Smile

A CRX will get out and scoot though I was in a friends Dodge Omni (many many years ago) with the 2.2L?----and spanked a CRX and later that night wooped a Toyota Supra. It is all about hp and torque vs. weight. A TC is a luxury CRUISER that will hold it's own with most cars and eat many of them through the twisties. I don't think that Ford had drag racing in mind when they developed the suspension for the TC and I'm all but sure that a turbo'd 2.3L was an after thought for that power plant. Either way, it is the most "comfortable" car I've ever owned and by comfort I mean all-around driveability and performance.

My Mustang will pounce all over my TC and be waiting at the finish line but...throw in a few tight curves and anythig more than 200 miles in the race and the TC will be zipping past the Mustang as it searches for it's last drop of petro! OHHHH YEAH...the seats, enough said!

Jeff...if I had a prize to offer you, you'de win!!!

I'll tell ya what, that little Omni would get laughed at at the stop lights but when the light turned green, it was all over. Almost makes me wish I'de have bought one and let it sit on blocks for the last 20 years. Nothing more funny than toying with a Corvette, only to blow him off the map whenever you decided to. LOL

From someone who has drag raced both a stick and an auto TC, I can tell you the trans does make difference.
I ran both my birds back to back at the local track a few years ago. The 5 speed car ran a 16.81 to the auto's lethargic 18 flat. They were both stone stock (including the factory low boost on the auto) so keep that in mind.
My stick car is now quick enough to outrun stock or mild LS1 cars and 5.0's. It is all in what you want your car to do and what you are willing to do to get it there.

I have spanked my share of 5.0's and scared the heck out of a few vettes, but the worst that I have ever felt was when a WRX ate my lunch. I looked them up and found out that they are alot lighter than our TC's are. Once I get a few things ironed out, I WILL go looking for that little t**d and we will see what we will see!!!

Just don't give up on the old gal, there is more potential in our cars than most the roll the streets. Plus there is alot of knowledge on this board from guys (like myself) that just dig the heck out of these little cars. Keep at it.

And on a side note--I have rebuilt my engine 6 times, turbo 3 times, and changed trannys out I don't know how many times. I have 6 cranks, 6 blocks and 5 trannys and many other spare parts. Not a big deal to me, it just comes with the territory. My wife hates my car just for that reason, and she refuses to drive it unless she has to.

It's the boost that makes the difference, not the trans. 15psi vs. 10 for the automatic is about a 40HP difference. The A4LD built properly will out perform the T5 in a drag race any day. Joe Morgan's Focus drag car runs a modified A4LD. He was running 9 second quarter mile times with that ride. The stick is more fun to drive when you can actually drive it like you stole it. It comes down to what do you want to do with the car. For road racing type activities, I would run a stick. For drag racing or autocross, an automatic is the way to go.
