Ignition Switch Failure FYI

I had been experiencing several weird electrical glitches lately. Oil, temp & fuel level gauges reading very low, speedo and tach jumping around, car would die and come back on while driving down the road, idle speed going high then mysteriously settling back out at 1k RPM.

I pulled the steering column shroud and found the ignition switch about to come apart! The four metal tabs that hold the connector / contact block to the switch body were never properly crimped down. The connector block was hanging down enough that upon removal and disassembly, I found the detente ball for the sliding contacts gone! I replaced the ball, cleaned, deoxed and regreased the switch internals. Then I recrimped the four tabs with a small riveting hammer. Everything seems to be back to normal now. Just thought everyone might like to know......

Replace the switch, Many Fords (and Houses) have burned to the ground. Recall went back to 88, bad switches back to 83-84. Ford saved money at your risk. Cheap at $20 or so. Mark

Slot the fastners with a dremel and it's cutting wheel and use a regular screw driver to remove and reinstall. Dremel rocks [Image: biggrin.gif]

Unless there have been significant changes to the way a spiral inclined angle works, yeah they just unscrew. Just slot the head like a regular screw.
