Idle/Driveability Issues

First off - nothing about my current setup has changed in quite some time.

Lately I've been having a good bit of pinging starting at about 14 psi on up, in second gear and up. I let it go for a couple of weeks and just drove it easy until I would have time to dig in and see what was going on. ALSO - I've only been letting it boost up to 10psi for the most part, but if I get on it at all, a couple seconds after I let off the gas I can smell... something. I don't know how to describe it, really. The smell has a fuel component to it, but it's not a straight fuel smell. I don't know if it's related or not. I feel like I only notice the smell when the BOV vents...

Today was worse - I would get on it a little and it just didn't want to accelerate normal until maybe 3500 rpm and up - whether it was boosting or not. It could be hitting 10 psi and accelerating like it's not boosting at all. It's most noticeable in second gear where it would accelerate slow up to a certain RPM and then basically launch, but it's not consistent. Acceleration is a little jerky as well. When I got home today it was not idling right at all - sounded like a tractor and the tach needle was jumping around.

I took some video of the idle:
Idle Video
While the idle is off pretty much throughout the video, starting around 3:30, and then at 4:22 the needle does some funky stuff.

At this point all I have done is verified that there are no intake leaks and fuel pressure is where it should be. Timing is right, TPS is right, and as I said, I haven't changed anything. Did a tune up just a couple/few months ago.

What I have NOT done yet is run the codes... just haven't had time yet. I was going to do it when I got home today, but my scanner wouldn't turn on and I didn't have time to hook up the test light and everything, so I'll try to get that done later tonight.

I'm wondering it my Chinese TFI is finally failing me. Thoughts???

Brian, I think you might be on to something with the Chinese TFI. Do you have a spare dist with known good TFI and PIP to try?

Yes and no, Jeff. I do have a complete spare dizzy, but the TFI and PIP are questionable at best. It's the one I replaced when I was having bucking issues (which stopped after I replaced it). I'll have to think of some way to get a hold of another dizzy on the cheap. With the seemingly never-ending medical bills of late, I can't afford to buy a complete dizzy, or even just a Motorcraft TFI at the moment. I'll figure something out to try.

I had bucking in my 84 a few years ago that a new TFI and PIP cured. The el cheapo PIP made it just a couple hundred miles before crapping out entirely.

I'd guess it's the TFI... ignition pulses from it drive the tach, so if the tach is jerky then the ignition signal in the TFI/PIP is jerky too no question about it. Knowing which one is the culprit is the hard part, in my experience. Try your old bucking TFI and see if the idle issue goes away?

Your idle vacuum is a few inches stronger than mine so I can't comment there, and my TC is running great.

Mines been doing close to the same thing for the last couple months with the idle. Hope your problem aint the same as mine, even though I haven't fixed mine to verify it yet. Gotta run and get parts.

Late update - replaced the whole dizzy and the issue went away. I am REALLY glad I did. I'll post up a photo later which will illustrate why... Confusedhocked:
