I am getting real tired of chasing down ignition problems with my car. I Cant figure out what is going on with my car.
Well here goes yesterday I started having problems with the car cutting a cylinder when boost went past 15psi. I thought I had the problem fixed, I fixed a bad connector on one of my plug wires which helped and had no more problem yesterday. Today i was taking my wife to work and the car ran fine on the way there, Stoped droped her off was pulling out of the parking lot a floored it to get across traffic and it had the same stupid mis! went to my work to get my W-2 shut the car off for about 20 minutes came back and the car ran good to 22psi, a couple minutes later it would only go to 18psi then mis, A couple more minutes go by and 15psi again.
The car idles great! doesnt mis at anything under 15psi. It has good fuel pressure. No codes.
I rechecked the plug wires and they are in good shape, still the same ohms as yesterday. What could cause this? It seems to temperature realted because of how it works ok when it cools for a few minutes. Could a TFI cause this? Any ideas guys?
Help me befor I go and do something drastic like swap a twin turbo 500 cadillac in it! [Image: biggrin.gif]

Since it only happens under high boost, try gapping the plugs at around .026 - .028. If that helps, then your ignition/wires may not be up to firing at high boost levels. I run a .028 gap for that reason.

I bet the smaller gap will do the trick.

I have an occassional high rpm miss (over 5500) I have cross checked plugs and wires. I even put in the whole MSD system, no change and it did not make the car idle or run any better. My current theory is that maybe the plug wites need to be seperated further than the stock wiring looms allow. I haven't tested this yet by seperating the wires more so it's just a guess.

How long has it been since you have changed your distributor cap? It sounds like a cross fire problem, or, a plug that is failing to fire when the pressure gets real high.

Thanks guys. The plugs are fresh and allready gapped at .028. It has been a while since I changed my cap, I was going to try that next after the car cools off some. I might try and spread out the plug wires some too. Thanks guys

Since you say it only happens above 15psi maybe insufficient fuel flow at high boost levels?

How the the ignition wire. Our 2.3 can burn them up. I had a similar problem until I replaced them.

Yup, my wires are at least 2" apart.
Did that when I went to msd.

Check your cap. The coil wire terminal could be carboned up or pitted on the inside causing intermitant firing problems, change the cap either way it always helps when they get old. If you were having problems with your plug wires chances are it will return again soon so get a good high quality set. I have been using Accel 300+ for a year with NO problems at all and they dont burn up like the stock wires? They are pricey but if you buy a set for an 8cyl you'll have extras down the road but they will probably be the last set of wires you ever need. Good luck.

Since it seems to do it more as it gets hotter I would look for a weak ground that is getting hot.
