What does the white smoke smell like, oil, antifreese (sweet) or plain water? How long was the car not used
Is there any sign of coolant in the oil?
How did you shim the HLAs.? Did you measure the gap with the HLA compressed meaning did you put the pressure directly on the HLAs or the springs?

This is a new engine that has not even been down the block. It has less than 1 hour of run time. I pressed down on the lifter after I squeezed the oil out of each one. Then I proceded to take a feeler gauge and measure the gap. the gap was about a 1.0 so I used a steel washer that measured .42 to shorten the clearance. When I started it, it ran fine but then it started knocking loud at idle. Shortly after it stated smoking but it had that oil smell. Can you help.

What do you mean by 1.0. You can't have had a gap of 1".
Compress the lifter (HLA), it does not take a lot of force. Measure the gap between the middle of the follower, where it rides on the cam and the camshaft. The cam must have the lobe pointing 180* away from the follower.
The shims go in the botton of the HLA bores.
It takes roughly a 3X thickness of shim to change the gap by 1X. Keep measuring the gap after each shim addition until the gap is between 0.035 and 0.045"
