How much boost do "normal" turbo cars have?

I was talking to some people online about turbo cars and mentioned the T-Bird makes 15-17 psi stock. They acted like I was insane! They were like "Are you SURE? That can't be stock. Did you disconnect the wastegate actuator? You're going to blow up that engine!" and so on.

So, what's a normal boost range for a typical turbocharged car? I know the Chryslers only made 7 or so, but I just figured that's because anything more would blow up their transmissions. [Image: wink.gif]

The non intercooled cars were I believe around 10 psi. Some may have gone 12, not sure. The intercooled cars were capable of 14-15 (5spd manual trans) but some only got that in 1st and 2nd (87, early 88s), 10 psi in 3,4 & 5, automatic 87-88 TCs were less.

I see.. My 88 (12/87 build) will read 15-16 or just a little over at its maximum. It is limited in 3rd thru 5th, but will hit full boost at 4400 rpm in any gear.

There was a T-Bird show on TV a few weeks ago, it showed a clip of an 88 Turbo Coupe commercial and you could clearly see the boost gauge go beyond 15psi and to the bottom of the red area! I know the boost gauge is inaccurate, but I still thought the latest TC's went beyond 15.

Most other turbo cars are restricted to 6-10 psi of boost. Volvos, Saabs, not sure about DSMs. Even the intercooled ones don't run much boost. I've gotten the same surprised reaction when I say I'm running 20 pounds of boost. Ford builds an engine capable of taking it, which says alot

I remember one of my teachers having a talon and it only got 9-12 and I have friends that have eclipses and other DSM cars which are intercooled and they run 9-12 even the ford probe gt turbo ran around there. Ford knew how to build one hell of an engine to run it from the factory at 15psi [Image: smile.gif] Thank god for 2.3L Turbo's and lets not forget Airresearch and Warner [Image: smile.gif]

Pete D hit the nail on the head. The '88 Automatic i had only went to 5-6psi when i got it and 10psi after i put in a bleed valve....it was very early in the model year i believe...the '88 5-speed i have now goes to 14-15psi 1-2 and 8-9psi 3-4-5 and its also fairly early.

I have the tv clip you are talking about on tape. the show was on the history channel. you can clearly see when you slow the tape down that the boost guage pegs right on 18 on the boost guage. its a pretty cool shot.

It is probably apples to oranges, but my S4 puts out 14.7 psi of boost, stock. Each turbo has an intercooler which helps. They are also low pressure blowers so the 14.7 is net pressure from both.

17 PSI, ay carumba! I got into it this morning to see what it would do. The most I saw was about 12 PSI but I was hurtling fown the highway so fast I was fearing the steely cold grip of handcuffs.
