How do you get the red piping out of the body moldings?

I noticed that I can order the new piping from AerobirdMotorsports, in several different colors (cool), but I was wondering just how I would go about removing the stuff. I'd hate to just try and rip it out and ruin something.

Did you try cleaning it? Im not trying to bag sales for Mike but I cleaned mine with a scotchbrite pad. I had black crap all over it I tried a plastic cleaner when I used the scotchbrite pad it cleaned it up great It looks brand new. If you can use a white pad or go to the hardware store and grab the softest pad they have.

I want it to be black. I was just gathering knowledge for when I order the black piping. Thanks for the cleaning tip though, did you try this method on any other part of the car with success?

Kev,

I just went through the process. The red stripe can be removed from the front and rear bumper covers along with the fender molding before the front wheel well and aft of the rear wheel well. These can be removed using a heat gun and a pair of pliers. A 3/8" wood chisel is a great assist to get the glue strip out.
The door moldings and the quarter panel moldings have a permanent red stripe, so if you want that black, you'll have to paint it. All the moldings can be painted.

Thanks for the tip, Dan. I knew the stripe could be painted because I already painted it, about 5 years ago. But the paint is starting to rub off in places so I was looking for a more permanent solution. Since the red strip won't come out of the door moldings, it looks like I'll be taping off the entire car again and repainting the strip. Oh well, at least I didn't buy the black piping first, only to discover it couldn't be used on the doors and sides. Thanks again

Kev,
I have seen where the strips hve been taped over. It can look very good if care is taken. I think there is a couple past posts on the type of tape, colors and maybe sources.

The sides are rubber and can be dyed very easily. Mother's Bumper black will take care of that very easily. All the other moldings come out as described. I've had 3 different body shops actually get the 85.5/86 side molding apart, and 1 bodyshop actually cut the red out of the 87/88 side stuff.
