HLA clacking problem

I just fired up my new motor today. It runs great and started on the first try.I let it run for 20 min or so and the hla's won't pump up.Its a hella loud.I have a custom schneider roller cam.I thought I had it ground on a stock base circle so as not to have to shim the hla's.I am thinking I may have to shim them.i was told I need to have .030-.040 with the lifter collpased between the follower and cam.I has 50-60 psi oil pressure with a gauge off the head.I also know it has oil in the head because before final assembly i turned it over by hand and there was a ton of oil everywhere. Is it collapsed hla's or shimming needed.I have a spare set of hla's.i also used ranger roller hla's if that makes a difference.

I would check the gaps with the HLAs collasped first. Also check the base circle to make sure what it is.

Any tips on how to do this? Mine are making some noise too, so I'll have to check them, but probably not till spring.

I asked to have it ground on a stock base circle but they were busy so it may not have been done. What clearance should I have with the hla's collapsed??I was told .020-.030.

You can use the type of valve spring compressor pictured to apply pressure directly to the HLA (not the valve spring) to bleed it down. Or you can remove the follower, then the HLA and compress it in a vice, reinstall it and the follower, apply pressure to the HLA and check the gap using feeler gauges. The desired gap is 0.040 - 0.050", the allowable is 0.035 - 0.055"

You only need two tools in life; WD-40 and Duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should use WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn't, use Duct Tape.

Well I checked the clearance and I came up with .070 collapsed and .025 to .030 pumped up.I added a washer approx. .030 and now I have around .035 clearance with the hla collapsed.I guess my cam wasn't ground on the stock base circle like I requested.Anyway
I am glad it was a simple fix and should have
it back together tomorrow. How tight can the clearances be till i have valves sticking open.Should I collapse all the hla's before shimming them or leave them pumped up and reinstall them.I don't want to do this twice.

I got it back together and the noise is gone at idle but when revving it is still there just not as loud.Should I shim it some more??
I will tear it apart again and recheck the clearances.I am hoping if I use a thicker washer it will quiet up the valve train.I am also running 10W30 if that makes a difference.I did check the clearance today with hla's collapsed and came up with .037.My machinist said I should have .020-.030.Is that correct??
