We believe my sons oil pump is bad. He has a 1987 Turbo 5 spd. He tried to order a replacement pump from NAPA but they have to get it from another state which increases down time. However, they say he can buy a high volume oil pump for $9 more and they have it in stock.

Is this a feasible replacement

IMO, the stock pump would be worth a day or 3 wait. Most parts places get things the next day when they're not in stock. What about a different store?

Some people run the high volume and some the high pressure, they work.

Power what makes you think the pump is bad. If you are not getting pressure reading from a reliable mechanical gauge then I would try that first. The stock gauge and sender have well know issues with accuracy. I have seen more than once replacing the sender and poof there is pressure again.

What eric said..... I have has several Fords that showed low to zero oil press on the stock gauge, only to find the sender was bad.

For the record, I have 2 years and 10,000 miles on a High-Volume oil pump, and I love it.

However, as the guys above said, why do you think it's bad?

He had a mechanical gauge and just like Jeff K stated, it would read normal, then drop to low to zero pressure. He bought a sending unit from Autozone but didn't understand the different kinds. We might get a close to OEM sending unit.
