Coming home today the car died. When I went to restart the engine (it didnt) the starter made a higher pitch turning noise as opposed to it's normal sound. Being towed any clues about the starter ..Engine was turning over but not firing up. any clues?

Are you positive the engine was actually turning over? not just the starter?

Which belts, accessory drive belts and cam belt or just accessory drive belts? Maybe the cam belt broke or distributor gear stripped. Pull dist cap and see if the rotor turns when cranked.

Pete, I'm w/ you on this one. Sounds just a like a broken timing belt. That's what I'm betting on.

Servey says...Number 1 answer...the timing belt was shredded wheat. Got it back together PITA runs like a top.. Woo Hoo...I wont forget that sound again. Can you upload a recorded engine noise for diagnostic purposes to the message board?? It would be a .WAV file.

If you change the belt every 60K as recommended you will never have to hear that sound again!! [Image: biggrin.gif]
