How you get those snowflakes so shiny???? Thats sweet, if I could do that I would keep my stock ones as well!!

The wheels are polished...as is EVERYTHING else on his car!!

I'v seen steel wheels polished to a chrome-like shine before. The method used for that is: 1. you need something to turn the wheel with the tire off. I've seen people jack and support the rear of the vehicle and run it to turn the wheel (that isn't real safe) and also I've seen people use a brake lathe just to get the wheel turning. 2. a wire wheel on a hand drill is used on the wheel from the center out to clean the old laminate/ sealer off and to take out any nicks or gouges. 3. Then switch to an abrasive pad (3m makes these spun plastic deals in various textures - you would want a telatively fine one to prep for the polishing) 4. then a polishing wheel attached to a hand drill (i believe 3m also makes these) with WENOL metal polish. use the 2 tube system. one tube is fine grit (the red tube) and the other is finishing, extra fine grit (the blue tube). this product will make any metal shine like a mirror. 5. Then a high temperature clear coat can be sprayed o the wheel (most auto parts stores have engine clear coat this will work). The wheels I have seen done like this were steel ralley wheels from a 80's regal. They came out really nice, but I don't know how long that they lasted. I also havn't tried this with aluminum wheels, but wenol is supposed to work with any metal. Is this similar to how you did it Dan E?

Simply put...

Strip the clearcoat (Aircraft Remover)
Sanding 100 grit
3M Abrasive pads
Sanding 400 grit
Sanding 800 grit
Sanding 1500 grit
Polish with emery compound
Sanding 1500 grit
Sanding 1500 grit
Sanding 1500 grit
Sanding 1500 grit
DRINK HEAVILY !
Sanding 1500 grit
Polish with emery compound
Polish with Red rouge compound
Polish with Chrome compound
Buff

No clearcoat (won't adhere as too slick) - periodically use Mother's Mag and Alum polish.

Is it better to sand by hand or sander? Also when you stressed the 1500 grit, you basically mean do them all 4 times or what(I need exacts, I'll be buying all I need this weekend to do it!)

I started out with a disk sander...as you get finer and finer in grit (BTW I recommend emery sandpaper) you should move to hand sanding.

Let's put it this way. If you can see a sanding mark...you won't be able to polish it out...

I seem to have to always sand then polish then sand then polish. Polishing makes all of the sanding marks stick out like a sore thumb !

2000 grit paper for a final sanding seems to help when I did my intake manifolds
