Help with carpet Dye

(This is my first post on any forum so please bear with me)

I need help with my carpet in my 87 T-C its dark blue and I want to change it to black.
I have completely gutted the inside and have dyed the plastics, dash board and ECT. With Dupli-color vinyl & fabric/carpet coating it works great for the vinyl and leather but it sucks at coating the carpet on the door panels I used 2 cans on one panel and it still needs more not to mention it makes the carpet crusty and it looks like road kill was used in the upholstery job. I also need to know about the headliner too. The other thing is I want to put some type of protecting coating over the stuff I have dyed black. my brother in law told me about something called ?perma plex? It’s a coating that seals everything up and makes the dash not crack, its like a permanent armorall the only thing you do is wipe it with a wet rag and it shines back up. I know SEM makes several different clear coats for there color coatings but its $15.00 a can vs. $7.00 for the other stuff that’s works the same as the SEM coat. I’m trying to go with a satin black them so I don’t want the permanent protection glossy if at all possible. Thanks for any input, JBD

Just buy new carpet. It costs about $120.00,brand new,pre-molded.Just do the final trimming around the edges for a perfect fit.You can never make old carpet look new.Buy the new stuff and you won't regret it.

He's right. I dyed all my interior from red to black, and the carpet stuff on the doors took a lot of dye to color, and it was the first thing to start showing red again after the dye. Forget about dying the carpet under your feet. I could never get the dye to cover all that hairy mess. Instead of recovering the doors in more hairy nonsense, I was thinking about just doing the whole door in vinyl. I think it would look cleaner, and no more road kill. Since you are talking about spending $7 a can on dye instead of $14 for the SEM stuff, I can see that you are on a budget (as am I), so I would just go talk to your local upholstery shop and see what they recommend. They may have some scrap stuff for you to use if you wish to recover, or they may have some secrets that can help you do what you are trying to do. Good luck!

If you have to,wait til you have the cash.Do it right the first time so you won't have to go back and do it again.A lot of times,it may SEEM like you're spending more to buy new carpet, but after all the dye is bought, all the trouble trying to make it work,it's cheaper to buy the new carpet. It's like buying a used part for $50.00,or a new one for $60.00.Take the high road.

well here is another question, regarding the dye. I need to dye the fabric on the seats to make them look healthier. Not changing the color, but just sprucing it up. Any thoughts on that one.

Ok that makes it a little bit easier for me but where can I get the new black carpet?
The reason I wanted to dye it is b/c typically the new stuff you can get is crappy in comparison to the stuff that’s in there, it is in great shape it is lush and the best part is when you go to clean it you can vacuum everything out of the carpet I have noticed on newer cars and remake brands of carpet is that it doesn’t like to release everything with just the vacuum you need to use a stiff bristle tire brush to loosen everything up after you go over it with the vacuum. I was thinking of the vinyl instead of the carpet on the door panels. Come on who has carpet on a door panel any way lol. Anyone know about the permanent sealant for the dash?

O also I forgot about the carpet in the back window what to do with that it’s almost turned in to powder and there are a few holes in it. Thanks so much for everyone’s feedback it means a lot to me. any ideas for the car are surly welcome thanks.
