Help - Runs real bad until warm

Hello all..

I'm having some problems I need help with. My engine runs real bad until it is warm. It runs exactly like a carburator without a choke. It chugs, jerks, and coughs and won't accelerate.

There are no codes. I tried replacing the ECT, but there was no change. I cleaned the IAC and checked the TPS.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

Got any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

Codes?

Jim, might help if you would put some of the basics about your car in your signature. Year and major equipment and mods may help getting needed responses.

Thanks for the reply Pete.

You must have missed it, but I mentioned it has no codes. Well, actually it had code 34, but it had the recall done, which I understand trips code 34.

The car is an 88 TC with a 255 walbro pump, kiban reg, and manual boost controller. Currentl set at 14 psi max.

My bad on the codes.
What is your base fuel pressure set at? What was the last thing that happened before this started?

The fuel pressure is 39 with the hose off. The last thing I did when this started is lower the pressure to 39. When I originally installed the pump and regulator, I set it at 45. It then crept up to 48 for some reason?! It gave me a code 42. When I lowered it to the stock rating, the code went away, but it started running like crap before it was warmed up.

Do you have any kind of AF gauge? Even if it is just a narrow band?

Yes, I have an Innovate wide band that I use to tune carburetor cars, but There is no extra bung in my exhaust for it, So I don't know how I can use it. The car runs just like it is too lean when it is cold.

This condition is often a bad sensor. I see you changed the ECT, which can cause this. Did you get a good brand replacement? I found out the hard way this is not one to get the cheap replacement

I believe it was an echlin from NAPA.
I replaced it because I was guessing that the computer used the ECT to determine whether the engine was cold or not, and if the mixture needed to be on the rich side. When it didn't change how the car runs, I didn't know what to think. I guess I could try another brand. Does motorcraft still make one that fits?
