Help me with a final decision - tire size!

I'm still dealing with getting the right wheel/tire combo on my '86. I spoke with AFS (wheel/tire dealer on Ebay) and they can install any size tire I want. I was thinking 245/45R17 (got a lot of recommendations on those, thanks!) on the 17x8 silver Cobra R's. Just for fun, I put on a set of 225/50R16's I had laying around. Yeah they look too small, especially in the back! I want to fill up the wheelwell quite a bit more. I know my new wheels will be 1" bigger (17's) but should I go with 245/50's or maybe even 60's? The other pic is with the stock 15" 10-holers. Tire size there is 235/60R15. Here's some more #'s to confuse ya! The 16" tires are 23-3/4" tall.
The 15" tires are 24-5/8" tall.
From ground to top of wheelwell is 27" with both sets. What'dya think, 45's, 50's or 60's??

The 245/45-17s will give you approx. the same rolling diameter as the 225/60-15s. Speedo will stay about the same.

Here\'s a picture of my TC from the passenger side with 245/50-17's and chrome Cobra-R rims. This one is from the drivers side rear. This is the directory with a bunch more pix in it; mostly they were of my paint when it was finished but a lot of them show the tires and such as well.

HTH with your decision.

JoeCool, I like the 50's! They certainly fill up the wheelwells! Does anyone else have a sideshot of 245/45R17's preferably on Cobra's for a comparison?? It would be a big help! Thanks!

There's a real neat java-based visual tire size calculator at Miata.net that you can use to actually see the size differences between different tires.

The diameter difference between the 245/45-17's and the 245/50-17's is about 0.9"; the 45's have a diameter of 25.7" and the 50's are 26.6".

HTH, enjoy the link.

Thanks for the link and replies! I've decided to run 245/45R17's on 17x8 Cobra R's. Thanks again!
