HELP. I HAVE NO BOOST!

I recently bought a 1988 automatic turbocoupe with the IHI turbo and have been tuning it up. When i first got it the boost only got up to 3-4 MAYBE 5lbs but the vacuum lines were cracked to hell so i didnt think twice. Well after replacing the vacuum lines with brand new ones the boost did not increase. Im under the impression that the auto's were tuned down anyway so i got a manual boost controller, bypassed the boost controller solenoid and played around with it today and STILL did not see any change in the boost. What am i doing wrong here? Is my waste gate actuator screwed? or do i just have the vacuum lines hooked up wrong?

Sounds like a wastegate issue. Wiggle the arm to check for free play. If you are careful, pull the reference hose & plug it, then hit the highway carefully and slowly accelerate from low RPM in 3rd or 4th gear. As revs climb watch the boost. The only limiting factor in boost increase would be your right foot, so be careful.

Could also be clogged cat or other exhaust restriction, or collapsing vam hose or other intake restriction.

Could also be a gauge that's lying to you... Smile Does it feels slow and/or sluggish?

That's what im thinking. My dad told me the wastegate could be rusted in place so im going to check it all out tomorrow. the guy who owned it before me had a cat put on to pass inspection and im thinking it may be clogging the exhaust too much. It definitely feels sluggish, i can feel the boost kinda sorta kick in around 2-2.5k RPMs but its just lacking a lot of power, and thats after i have adjusted the timing, replaced the plugs and wires and cleaned the injectors.

The IHI waste gates are not as robust as the T3...

Hope its the exhaust...changing waste gates will be tuff.

sooo.....after working on my car all day, and getting into predicaments that were best solved with a sledgehammer, i have confirmed that it is a wastegate issue. there was a slight build up of rust on my actuator pivot which kept it from fully opening OR closing. On top of that there is a little build up on the wastegate itself which i will clean tomorrow. I knew something was wrong when i hooked an air compressor up to the actuator and it barely twitched at 60 psi. Anyways i should have everything cleaned up and put back together tomorrow so im crossing my fingers that this will solve the issue.

60 psi to the actuator is a lot. I think they open with about 10. I hope you didn't rupture the actuator diaphragm, if it wasn't already ruptured.

^^^^ Yup, 60 psi will blow the diaphragm in the WGA for sure.

Idk, i just got it cleaned up and hooked it up to my air compressor and it works fine, fully opens up a little before 20 psi. I think it has a relief valve built in on the bottom so it doesnt rupture under high pressure because i heard and felt air coming out during the 60 psi test before. My compressor is about 40 years old and a POS so the gauge may be completely off though

There is no relief valve in any WGA I have seen. If air is coming out anywhere means its bad.
