Head gasket or what?!

I put on a new head gasket and a ranger roller cam in my car. I had the Esslinger cam in the head , but I did not like how it ran. Anyway, the car feels like it is running on 3 cylinders. How will I know- without a compression tool-if I put the head gasket on wrong. I torqued it to specs (30-60-90lbs)and in the right sequence. Give me some tell tale signs to look for. Thanks

I think the first thing I would do is check the oil for water, and the radiator for oil.

If both of those show no signs of contamination, (hopefully) I would get a spray bottle and shoot a stream of water on the exhaust manifold at each cylinder to determine if they have equal heat accross each of them.

If one seems to create less steam than the others, that is the cylinder that you have a problem with.

It may be possible that the follower for that cylinder is not in properly and not allowing it to open and close the valve as it should.

Did you actually pull the head to change the cam? or was there more to it than I am aware?

rpratt, I put a ported head on too. Since I was changing the cam, I figured I would put the ported head on at the same time. I put new lifters in too-stock length for a 88 Turbo Coupe.

RDOG,
I have an IR noncontact temperature gun. I am willing to loan it to you if you want to check the exhaust temperatures closer. E-mail me if you want to.

Thanks Kev, but I dont think I'm that bad yet [Image: smile.gif] Anyway, I bought a jy injectors harness that has all the clips in tacked. Maybe a broken clip could be the problem? I have no water on the dipstick and no oil in the radiator. No water, oil or wet gas on the sparks plugs. Any other sugestions.

Why bump something 23 minutes after it was just responded to?

It's pretty hard to put a head gasket on "wrong", and even so, it's unlikely to have blown after only trying to idle.

Check your plug wire order. In rushing to get my car back together, I've haphazardly crossed a few wires a few times. Have you verified both cam and ignition timing?

Sorry, that does sound like I'm calling you a moron, but I meant injectors 'plugged' back in. The elecrical connectors are easily missed when putting the head back together.

Ok, I retorked the head to double check whether I made have missed a bolt. Put the stock cam pulley back on and car still runs the same, so I think it is elctical. car starts but wont idle and if I rev it up it will run but feels like it is firing on 3 cylinders. Ran codes and got 62, 82, and 83. I think 62 is the TPS? I looked at the wires and the wires running from the ground of the TPS and it is soldered to the ground wires of the temperature sensor on the lower intake and the wires were slightly exposed. Do you suppose that the wires touched ground or something and burnt something out in the computer? HELP!!
