Has anyone seen this? turbo question

I got my new turbo for the car and started installing it tonight got the old one off and found that the compressor side impeller is GONE! Housing looks fine the shaft had backed out into the exhaust side and was stuck on the downpipe flange. Don't have a clue where the impeller went off the other side... strange!

That would explain the low boost reading Big Grin
Did you look in the VAM hose or the turbo outlet?
The nut must have backed off and the impeller went ???

No sign of it anywhere LOL. Sucked down about 3 qts of oil in 25 of run time when i got it home just found this today

Check the inside of your Cat if you still have one! IF it came apart slowly, the little chunks spit into the exhaust...
I've see it happen on big Diesels. The impeller erodes badly, and comes apart after it thins out.
Then again, just could be a heavy foot as well.(-:

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think he means the air side, not the exhaust side. Although it would have to go through the exhaust side eventually if it went that direction.

It is the air side missing... I don't want to think of where it would have to go if it made it to the exhaust side from teh intake side. YIKES!

Guess I should have read the opening line a bit better. I just go with Turbine and compressor. Wow, if the Compressor wheel cam apart it only has one way to go, through the intake, valves and then the exhaust. Removing the head would be the only real way to acess what happened. The intake should be well sand blasted!
Stock 87, no mods, Black with the grey interior.
