Gnari to E6 Comparison...

I just picked up one of the Gnari exhaust manifolds to run an external waste gate this year and thought I wold post some pics to compare and give my thoughts. First I took some side by side shots and noticed that the inlets and the outlet look bigger on the Gnari compared to the E6. The Gnari has what appears to be a simple port job already done to it, I did not ask Gnari to do this, but it looks good.First I used some calipers that I used when porting my head exhaust ports, I set the calipers to the same diameter of my ported head exhausts and sure enough, the Gnari is bigger, then I made some measurements and all four inlet ports are indeed bigger than a stock E6. The manifold outlet is also bigger on the Gnari compared to the stock E6, you can see the difference in measurements in the pics. They both weigh in about the same on my luggage scale at 14lbs. One area I did notice a difference is in the internal flow diverter, the Gnari has very little in the way of a flow diverter when compared to the E6, I may have to grind this in a bit to get it to flow towards the turbo. Other than that, it looks to be a well made manifold with some nice little touches such as the "Gnari" name scribed into it as well as what appears to be a serial number. The interior will get some sanding rolls to smooth it out as it has the typical cast roughness to it, and the typical E6 interior bumps are minimal in the Gnari.
Also, as the Gnari has larger inlets, should I match the exhaust ports on my head 1/8" bigger to match?

i love my gnari manifold. well built piece. i hadnt thought about port matching.i dont think it would hurt.

The manifold looks very nice. I have been interested in the kit they make for our cars.

Do you plan to coat the manifold before installing? Maybe ceramic?

Mikey, yes I do plan on coating it, looking at the Swain White Lightning coating, supposed to be really good and they are right here in NY. I looked at the Gnari kit they had as well, but from what I've read on Turboford, the wastegate they sell with it is kinda cheap. I just bought the manifold, the wastegate down pipe and the bolt kit. The wastegate I am going to get instead is a Turbosmart Gen 5 38mm. I am going through the manifold this week to clean it up with some die grinder bits and sanding rolls. I just wish there was a way to get farther inside it.

Another gnari manifold user here. I really like the manifold as well. I wanted to run an external wastegate and keeping stock placement of turbo at the time was also important. Been running it for about 3 years now and it's great. I can attest that the wastegate it comes with is not great. It does function but it is very large; makes it impossible to pull the spark plug out of cylinder 3. I also went with a Turbosmart 38mm wastegate. I had one on a previous project car and liked it.

Boport did an interesting write up (on Facebook maybe) that showed the flow comparisons between the gnari manifold, stock e6 and his tubular manifold. The gnari manifold is comparable to the e6 manifold (although slightly less flow). The flow numbers were as follows:
Stock gnari 132.4 CFM > Stock E6 138.2 CFM > Ported Gnari 144.5 CFM > Ported E6 149.5 CFM > Boport Header 166.8 CFM > No manifold on flow bench 176.8 CFM

I'm not sure when this test was performed. I believe it was recent (maybe August 2020) so I can't imagine that gnari has made serious revisions since then. I'm a big fan of this manifold but the above data has shown how much can be had with some porting. From what I've gathered on other forums it seems that smoothing out the inside, port matching the gasket on the outlet (turbo side) and trying to smooth the flow direction on hole 2 (least amount of flow on this hole) has garnered the best results. I will be doing this as a project come spring time and will report back here.
88 Turbo Coupe: Front mount intercooler, MGW short throw shifter, full coilover conversion, tubular control arms front and rear, svo front brakes, vacuum assist brake swap, manual steering swap, GT35R turbo with external gate, pimpx ecu, 60lb injectors, 3 core aluminum radiator, Boport 1.5 cam, gutted upper, corbeau fixed back seats, and the list goes on.

Thanks for the tip.  So on your manifold they should not coat the interior nor the mating surface to the motor since no gasket goes there.

Looking forward to your results with the manifold.
