Glowing Red Exhaust Manifold

I think I'm ready to take this thing to the junkyard. One problem after the next. First is the thing running hot. Most of the time the needle sits on "N" unless I put the heat on it wants to go higher. This morning I get off at 5 a.m. and decide to go for a lil drive because I have to burn this gas so I can change the &@^#&$ing gas tank. Even with the heat off it was above "N", just under the red. So I decide to go to a DIY car wash and hose off the radiator to see if that would help. I pop the hood and the exhaust manifold was so red I swore it looked like Satan smiling at me. I searched and found somebody was having the same problem and someone said it could be the timing. My timing is set dead at 10 but it still pings when I give it gas. Could the Gillis be too high at 17? Could it be the NGK's? Somebody please help before I go to jail for stabbing a "Bird" to death.

I have been where you are SEVERAL times, don't give up!I still say it sounds like either timing(cam timing)?Have you replaced your dizzy or timing belt anytime lately? The other thing to check is fuel pressure. You are running lean, now whether it's from timing being off or low fuel pressure is yet to be determined. What is you FP set at?Do you have an AFPR??Tell us where you've been so far,we will help you work it out!

The timing belt was changed in September '03, but I don't recall the pinging until recently. I wouldn't even know how to check the fuel pressure, but the car is going in the shop Friday (again) to have the fuel tank changed and I guess I'll have him check over everything. It's just a P.I.A. Thanks...

If the manifold and or turbine housing is glowing red after normal driving (not hard driving) then it's a problem and may also be why your temp gauge is so high.

The things that cause it to run hot are it's too lean or too rich. There are a lot of things that can cause either of the above. If your getting a lot of pinging, that says the problem is probably running lean. Like Hybrid said, you need to check cam timing first, then ignition timing. Next is look for a vacuum leak. Hook a vacuum gauge to any port on th vacuum tree. You should see 18-21" at warm idle. Only do this after cam and ignition timing have been verified. Anything lower than 18 indicates a vacuum leak or an abnormal mechanical condition. The EGR valve leaking would be a vacuum leak and is frequently associated with light load pinging.

If all the above checks out, then run the fuel system diagnostics I sent, after you change the pump

Finch is the character from American Pie, but the movie quote is from American Pie 2. Finch is learning tantra for the much anticipated return of Stifler's mom. He is watering a ficas and claims that he was on the threshold of "letting it go" while watering the plant, and Stifler says to finch what is in Hybrid's signature. Yeah, you didn't want to know.
