Gauges bouncing

Hi. As of last night, my fuel guage stopped reading, speedo started turning on and off, and tach became jumpy. Is this something to do with that gauge flux thing in the FAQ's, or a whole other whack'o'problems ?

The IRV normally affectes the oil pressure, coolant temp and gas gauges. I'm trying to send you some schematics.

Pete is correct, the gauges and the speedo / tach get power from 2 completely different circuits. They do, however, share a common ground, if I remember correctly. Could just be a bad connection at the cluster connectors..... went thru that a few weeks ago myself.... had lcuster out to replace the mechanical IVR with a solid state one (a different design than the one in the tech articles, and it works great.... none of the problems that seem to be associated with the one in the tech articles). After putting the cluster back in, and putting the dash together, went for a ride, and after about 10 min, speedo quit working. Out came the cluster again.... I sprayed contact cleaner in the connector at the top, and lightly sanding the printed circuit connector at the bottom, followed by contact cleaner, and it has been fine for 1000 miles.

On my '85.... this was a sure fire sign that the alternator was going out or had gone out. Does it get worse when the air-conditioner or fan is switched on? Check to see if the battery is getting a good charge with everything switched on at idle.

Are you going to share your design? I'm getting a bit better at soldering now that I have discovered flux and high wattage irons, and that sounds like a good project.

by adding a few filter capacitors and a protection diode you can greatly increase the reliability and provide steady current.
