I'm stumped. I've been struggling with this and I can't seem to find the problem. I've done searches and performed all the recommended remedies. With the gas situation and the extreme heat here in SoCal, I have to do something about my gauges. They haven't worked in a long time. When I turn the key to "run" or when I start the car it seems the gauges 'want' to work. What I mean is, they move slightly then settle back down after about two seconds. I may be wrong and I probably am, but this indicates to me that the gy/y resistance wire is okay but what do I know? I replaced the IVR and that didn't change anything and neither did a new ignition switch. I plugged in an instrument cluster from the jy just for reference and it behaved the same way. After reading all the related posts I've determined that it is one of those three things. If that's true then I know it's me. Comments?
BTW Jeff, did you get my email?

SOrry it took me so long to respond to this, and no, I didnt gt your E mail.
From what you describe, I would say the resistance wire is probably bad. Pull the cluster again, and check the resistance from ig sw to cluster connector.... should be about 8 ohms if I remember correctly.

I would double check the bakolite plug that goes into the ignition switch. I would bet that there is corrosion or broken connector there.
Check what Jeff said first, then check that gy/y wire in that plug to see what is up with that.

Not trying to hijack a thread, but, my 88 TC has the identical problem. Speedo and tach work, no other guages.
From what I am reading, it looks like the ignition wire seems to be a common problem. Is this correct.
My buddy and I just checked the little long resister in the back of the cluster and it is good. Likewise, we checked the little square circuit breaker, and it tested good.
Any suggestions on what else to do, other than the ignition wire?
Thanks for the info on this board too!

No luck. I'm going to have a pro look at it. I don't have the proper gadgets and the schmartz to do any good. I'll report back.

Thought I would let you know, and it might be something for your to double check. We discovered this afternoon that it was the ignition switch plug that mounts to the steering column. The plug itself was bad. We replaced it, and guages work! What a relief! Thought I would pass that along to you.

Okay, on my coupe, a buddy and I worked on it, as I posted above, and discovered that the grey wire into the ignition switch was broken. He soldered it and all was well, until today, 8-10-08), when my son said that the temp, and oil guageswere not working, but, the amp guage is working.
Would appreciate any help!

The GY/Y resistance wire is very difficult to solder.... It is made out of some wierd alloy. Check the solder connection.
