I got a gauge cluster with the 140MPH speedo and I'm wanting to know how I can change the miles to my correct miles that is on my old cluster. I haven't installed the new cluster yet. I want to change the miles first.

The odometer is a seperate part inside the speedometer. You can swap your odometer module into the new speedometer, and have your original mileage.

If you take the speedo apart, you will see a metal rod, roughly 1/16" in diameter with splined ends that is press fit into the plastic arms that hold the number drums. There are tangs on each number drum that engage the metal rod. Use a small punch, rod, etc to press out the metal rod. You can then rotate the number drums to any mileage you want, and then reinsert the metal rod to lock it in place.

Hmmm...which option...my current odometer doesn't rotate sometimes so I may go with Jeff's option...or if the odometer not rotating doesn't have to do with the odometer itself, I may go with Martin's option. Thanks for the info.

Jeff K;

I can't believe you described this procedure!

My question is: Do the round lugs have to all line up when the gears come around at 0?

The reason i ask, is that I did the pin trick, but while I was driving to work the next day, I couldn't remember where the 10K digit wheel round tooth was aligned with which gear on the drive wheel. After a few minutes panic...(I didn't want to do it over!), I figured I had at least 10K miles until it tried to turn over round tooth into peaked tooth, and if it rolled over successfully, i could go another 10K before I played 'speedo wheel of fortune' again. I just want tit to last till winter, which at this rate it will, then I can redo it.

I guess another thing I am trying to say is that the procedure as described may be missing the trick about lining up the different shaped teeth at whatever mileage it is selected to. This was easy for me because I rounded to 0 except for the 10K digit.

Let me know!

I actually dont remember all the details of the procedure as I did it about 1 1/2 years ago. I do remember that it wasnt very difficult, and I didnt have any problems. All I did was rotate the number drums to the mileage on the "new" speedo to the numbers on the old one (right down to the mile digit) and put it back together like it was, and it has worked out fine.

I did it so the new speedo (140 mph one) would read the correct mileage for the car. I am sure we are all aware that altering (lowering) the mileage on a car is a crime.

Thanks Jeff, I was only expressing my amazement that someone else would dismantle the odometer instead of just swapping the module. I usually don't use smilies, so my inflection is not clear sometimes. [Image: cool.gif]

I'll keep my fingers crossed. I was hoping it was no factor...

No offense taken..... I like to take stuff apart and see exactly how it works. When I did the odo mileage change a while ago, I was amazed at how easy it was, considering I thought that odos were supposed to be "tamper proof" to prevent such a thing!

Next point should be the recalibration of the needle once it is reassembled. I read about the signal generator and bench cal procedure! [Image: eek.gif]

I think this is relevant regardless of whether you roll the meter or replace the odometer module...

I just did a gravity compensation by allowing for the weight of the pointer to drop itself back to zero then checked the odometer against a measured mile on the highway, then used the elapsed time function off the onboard clock to time a mile in 60 seconds at 60 MPH...then used the firm ride system engaging at 83 MPH as another checkpoint, I believe that has it's own speed input separate from the speedo.

Checked good!
