If it is the O rings, which you can get at any parts store for a few $$ it isnt worth spending $100+ for new or rebuilt injectors.

You dont even have to pull the upper intake to replace them. The fuel rail is attached with 2 bolts. Remove them and you can pull the fuel rail away to replace O rings (or injectors). Takes very litte time.

O ring leaks are much more common than injector leaks on any 30 year old car. If it were mine, I would replace the O rings, (be sure to lube them with a little engine oil when installing them so you dont tear them) and see if that cures the issue.

I actually had leaking injectors (and I use the plural because there was more than one). Fuel could be seen seeping out of where the plastic collar surrounds the injector body, just below the top o-ring.

Like you, I was alerted by the strong smell of gasoline, and upon some investigation I found the problem. I tried new o-rings and that did not work...I was becoming fairly agitated as one of the last things you want is fuel spilling out onto a hot engine. Because I did not understand how fuel injectors could leak, I was hesitant to spend a couple of hundred dollars on new ones (I recall each was about $96 from Ford)—I went to a salvage yard and got a couple of injectors from a junk vehicle for around $10. After giving them a good cleaning and installing new washers, o-rings and a new pintle (blue plastic “hat”), I put them in and tried my best to think happy thoughts. Sure enough, that solved the problem.

I had the tan colored ones originally, and the salvage ones were the same. Unfortunately finding those same injectors in a salvage yard today would be very difficult, as very few Ford vehicles of any model from 1983-88 exist there now.

I tried everything I could think of, even—I’m embarrassed to say—J B Weld. Nothing worked. This problem haunted me for a month before I got it fixed. Thankfully it never returned.

NAPA has a kit with pintles, o-rings and plastic washers; the part # is 2-12087. So does Pep Boys: part # 27408.
