gas mileage decreased w / K&N?

I recently installed a k&n cone filter, in my 88 manual TC, to the VAM about a week and a half ago. Since then my gas mileage has been for shit. I installed a cold air induction set up with help from the tech article also. Why is my car guzzling gas now? I thought the K&N would increase gas mileage, not hurt it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

The K&N should indeed increase gas mileage, provided your driving style has not changed; however, the lower restriction does allow the turbo to spool a little better, and pump more air into the engine. More air requires more fuel, there's your answer.

sure, that makes sense and all, but my mileage went from a respectable 23-26 mpg to 10-16 mpg. I had expected to lose a little bit in mileage, but by more than half my original?

Put the stock setup back in and clock it again, see what you get.

Did you unplug the electrical connector to the VAM? Whatever is wrong it isn't the K&N.
Something is wrong. if you want e-mail me and I'll send you some info on the VAM. I would try pulling the codes and see what comes up.

The only thing about installing the K&N that got me a little concerned was that with the elbow tube that connected the stock air box to the VAM, there was also another piece of tubing that went down to a little black box. With the elbow piece gone, the little black box (no idea what it really is) now has one side open. A friend told me it was just for vapor collection and not to worry about it. It didnt sound quite right to me, but i went ahead anyways. What is that little black boxand could that be whats messing me up?

was it a black canister, down below the air box? if so, that box is your charcoal canistor for scavenging fuel vapors, and if that hose is disconnected, it's possible that you're losing fuel through *evaporation* out through the hole. you'd better connect it back up the way it was!!

The line to the charcoal canister won't hurt anything not being connected. It will not affect mileage. It take a vacuum (minor amount) to draw the fumes from the tank. This is not your gas mileage problem.

Run the codes. Getting 10 mpg = probably running real rich.
