So i know i want to run about 18 pounds but i would like to be able to run 23 pounds in the future.
So will a 255 do it?
and which kind? (intank or inline)
i have an 86 tc and im pretty sure the stock one went out so i need to swap soon for my daily driver!

I recommend the 255HP and on your car it goes in the tank. Buy from a reputable dealer as the off shore knockoffs are junk.

Sending units are obsolete. It is separate from the pump. It the sender is working OK, leave it alone.
The 255HP is the GSS340 model:

Hey pete! I was just reading this thread and I was wondering something. I know that with my 84 I have two pumps. I also read on another form that I could possibly do away with the pump on the rail and go fully with one in the tank. My question is. Would just a standard wally 255 for the 85-88 work in my "in tank" strainer?
And on a side note. I was able to get the 84 primer pump/ strainer from autozone for about 150 i believe.

Assuming the 84 is the same as the 86 to 88 style tanks, the sending unit is in a seperate location in the tank, and has no relation to the pump hangar. The in tank pump has a resistance wire in the ground circuit to reduce voltage to that pump. Be sure to bypass this resistance wire when putting in a 255 pump and eliminating the rail mount pump.

Yes a standard Walbro has been used, in the tank, to convert to a single pump setup. I don't know if the stock strainer will work. I also don't know about the '84 sending unit. On later tanks, the fuel pump and the sending unit are in two different locations in the tank, not sure about the 83-84 tanks?

The 84 uses the same sending unit and fuel pump hanger. Here is a picture of said unit..
