How loud should the fuel noise be? Any at all? Mine has a high pitched whine to it that I can hear most times.

Some pumps are noisy, some are quieter. In my experience, the high volume / high pressure pumps tend to be a little louder than stock pumps. The main thing to watch out for is a significant change in the noise, which often indicates the pump is on its way out.
