Fuel leak

I've been keeping my eye on my tank the last few weeks and I'm noticing that around the rim and the bottom vents of the cover there is gas seeping through the. I haven't taken the cover off yet mostly becuase I'm afraid of what I might find. Does anybody else know about this type of problem? Also, when you turn off your car, does your fuel pump keep going for a few seconds after the engine quits? Is it my fuel pump?

Fuel pump should shut off when key is turned off. As soon as the key is turnedoff, EEC power relay oprns, and this cuts power to the pump relay. It is possible that you have a sticking pump relay or EEC power relay, or even an ignition switch failing if pump runs for a few seconds when key is turned off.

There are lots of places for fuel leaks: Leaking at the pinchweld, pinhole leaks due to rust, leaks at fuel pump flange or fuel level sender flange, leak at the vapor/rollover valve grommet, leaks at the fuel line connections to pump flange, rusted metal lines on pump flange. The only thing that is NOT causing the problem is the pump itself. DOes it get worse with a full tank, and reduce or stop with, say, 1/4 tank?

I'm thinking it has something to do with the pump, maybe its reversing after the key is turned off, thats kind of what it sounds like. It only seems to leak for about 2hrs after i stop driving it and then it dries out. How would I check these relays and stuff? This cars been rewired just about all the way through after it had a little...uh...fire. It was small, but it managed to wipe out the wiring for the interior lights, stereo, mirrors, and clock. So in the rewiring i could've messed something up?

The problem is NOT THE PUMP ITSELF!!!!!! As I said, could be the square O ring at the pump flange, or one of the metal fuel lines that come out of the flange, but NOT the pump.

There is NO WAY the pump can run "in reverse.

The reason is seems to stop after a few hours is probably that the leak is somewhere near the top of the tank, and fuel gets out while driving due to sloshing.
