Fuel....

Hey folks.
Does everybody run supreme fuel or does it really make a difference? Its all unleaded now, just higher octane. Its almost $6.50/gallon here for the regular unleaded. Then the super is another .30/gallon. Thanks for the input.

You can run 87 octane on a stock or nearly stock engine if you put the fuel switch to regular and you use stock boost levels. In the premium position you should be able to run 91 octane because it has to be able to run on that on the left coast. I usually run 93 octane in mine and that should be fine until you get into real big boost numbers or additional timing advance.

I generally run 2-3* additional advance and can do so on 87 octane but I need to keep the boost below 15. Every engine is different, so go slowly and listen for detonation

Good grief! 6.50? Time for a moped....

Really though, if you plan on keeping it stock or near stock, Pete's advice is right on the money.
On the other hand if you want to modify it for more power and you have access to E-85 in your area, I would switch over to the corn fuel. Poor man's race fuel. I switched over back in March and it was the best thing I ever did. I can run 32psi boost with 20 degrees of timing on $3.25 a gallon fuel.
Of course my Bird is a ways past the average enthusiast build so this advice may not apply Wink

Not to hijack, but say you have 1/4 tank of 93 and you want to toss in 5 or so gallons of 110 race fuel will they mix ok or will it cause problems?

You can mix the fuel but the overall octane of what's in the tank will be less than 110 but more than 93. It should mix just fine.
